At a meeting of 500 working men a resolution was passed condemning the proposed expenditure upon immigration. Sir William Jervois and Colonel Scratohley have inspected the Cerberus, and were present at successful experiments with a new torpedo, which is an improvement on Whitehead’s. Palmer advices state that hundreds of Chinese are in the last stages of destitution, yet hundreds more are pressing on towards the goldfields. In Adelaide a three months’ Supply Bill for £300,000 passed through the Assembly. ’ The Tasmanian general election has terminated in a minority for Ministers. Seventeen Oppositionists and fifteen Ministerialists were returned, and of the latter two or three are doubtful supporters.
