EXPLANATION.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir,— ln your report of the City Council proceedings, you make it to appear that I doubted the word of the present trustees of the Basin Reserve, a thing I had not the remotest intention of doing. AATiat I said was, “ AVhat guarantee can we have that after the trees are planted the reserve may not be again closed to the public; the present trustees cannot bind their successors iu the matter.” The omission of the latter portion would leave the inference that I offered a gratuitous insult to gentlemen for whom I have every respect.—l am, &0., J. A. Allan.
