(PER PRESS AGENCY.) Auckland, Wednesday. The Waterworks will be officially tested at 2 o’clock to-day. Te Patui was hung this morning for the murder of Morgan in Ngaruawahia gaol. Te Patui was baptised, at his own request, on Saturday. He struggled about three minutes after the drop felk Alexandra, Wednesday. Storekeepers have been busy this week past, and the township is full of country natives with their produce. Tawhiao has called a meeting at Hikurangi for Monday next, to consider the advisability of inviting the Governor to a meeting, and for fixing the time and place. Tawhiao is now anxious for such a meeting. Napier, Wednesday. The Georgia Minstrels conclude a most successful season to-night. The house has been crowded every night. At the inquest this afternoon on the late fire an open verdict was returned. The (ire is supposed to have originated by the flue of an American stove heating the chimney casiug. A man named Goddard, a market gardener, was killed to-day by being run over by his own dray, tire horses having been startled while going along the road by hearing the whistle of an engine. The man, who was sitting on the shaft, foil off, and the wheel went.ovor him and killed him instantly. Gretmoutii, Wednesday.
The Albion, from Melbourne, arrived at Hokitika last night. The Despatch went out to tender her this morning, and after waiting twelve hours in the roadstead returned to port without seeing the Albion. The latter vessel arrived in the roadstead at 7 p.m., hut there was no chance of tendering her in the dark, as the sea was rapidly increasing. Hokitika, Wednesday.
The s.s. Albion arrived hern last night, but the tender only returned this morning. She left Melbourne on the 17th inst., but brings no Australian news of importance. Nothing is talked of in Victoria just now hut the elections, which have so far resulted in fifty-one Oppositionists and only fifteen Ministerialists being elected. It was a crushing defeat to the Government. The polling was very close. Two Ministers have lost their seats, and many old members have been rejected, Chiustchduch, Wednesday.
Shipmasters in Lyttelton are signing a petition to the Commissioner of Customs for the erection of a light on the North Head of Rort Underwood.
The plant and buildings of the Canterbury Spinning and Weaving Company will probably he purchased by a private firm. DUNKlilx, Wednesday.
The Tablet Company last night declared a dividend of 10 pier cent. The paid-up capital of £GOO has been doubled by the profits since the establishment of the paper. The City Council has rescinded the resolution making it compulsory on the proprietor of the Princess Theatre to afford greater means of ingress and egress.
