Turnbull and Co.’s barquentine May, has, we are pleased to state, been appointed to the chief officership of the N./.S. Co.’s new vessel the Opawa, now at Lyttelton. Captain B. Cregh has taken his place in the May. The steamers Stormbird for Wanganui and Napier for Foxton sailed yesterday afternoon, the former at 2.30 and the latter at 4 o'clock.

, The following vessels were at anchor in Worser Bay last night Pelican, Alert. Dido. Enterprise, and Falcon. Messrs. McMeckan, Blackwood, and Co.’s s.s. Ringarooma. Captain Whitburn, returned to port yesterday afternoon, and was alongside the Queen’s wharf at 3.15 p.m. She left Nelson at 6 o’clock yesterday morning, and experienced light variable winds and fine weather, with heavy southerly roll, throughout. The Ringarooma sailed for Melbourne via Lyttelton, Port Chalmers, and Bluff at 9 o’clock last evening. The fore-and-aft schooner Kate McGregor, Captain Matthews, ran into port yesterday morning. She is on a voyage from Lyttelton to Waikato River, When through the Strait she experienced the terrific gale of Tuesday last, and lost all her canvas, which compelled the captain to run for this port to repair damages. The s.s. Kiwi arrived In port from Napier at 1.15 a.m. yesterday. She left there at 4 p.m. on Wednesday last, went into Blackhead, but the westerly gale prevented her doing any work; then pushed on for Castlepoint, but for the same reason was unable to do any work, and consequently came on this port. The Kiwi will sail for Castlepoint and Napier to-day. The s s. Taranaki sailed for Lyttelton and Port Chalmers at 1.15 p.m. yesterday. The s.s. Kennedy made another start for Nelson and the West Coast shortly after 6 o’clock last •evening. The topsail schooner Clio, which has been laid up In port since Anniversary Day, was taken alongside the breastwork yesterday morning, where she commenced taking in ballast. It is likely she will go from here to Nelson,

The May, it is expected, will sail for Hongkong t^eday. The s.s. Tui left Lyttelton at Cp.m. on the 10th, arrived at Kaikoura at 0 a.m. on the 11th ; sailed again at noon, and arrived at the wharf at 9.30 last night. Experienced moderate S.E. wind from Lyttelton to Kaikoura, thence cairn weather, with heavy sea. The Tui is expected to sail forFoxton to-day. The barque Edwin Bassett hauled out from the wharf yesterday morning, and had some difficulty in doing so on account of the tidal waves. Twice had she to drop her anchor to prevent her being carried away with the winch set out from the reclaimed land. ” .She, however, got away safely, and brought up close to the Pilot Station, in Worser Bay. The barque Vindex will go from here to Newcastle.
