AUSTRALIAN SUMMARY.
BY TELEGRAPB. At Newcastle a Maitland steamer ran into the lighter Champion, cutting her in two, A man named Campbell was drowned. The Brisbane health officer boarded 1 the steamer Kate, on which Governor Kennedy has been quarantined. The ladies objected to an examination, and the Governor supported their objection. A Medical Board was appointed, and has resolved to release the vessel. The Governor then landed, and the Mayor presented an address. A large procession was formed, including the Ministry, the Mayor and Aldermen, friendly societies, 400 volunteers, citizens, and several bauds of music. Large crowds of spectators lined the thoroughfares, and it was the grandest reception ever known in Queensland. The Governor was sworn in at 4 o’clock.
Parliament will probably meet on the Bth of May. The Adelaide acceptances for the Cup are: — Mary Gladstone, Glarry, Vain Hope, Venus, Speculation, Pride of the Hills, W.G., Emulation, Neckersgat, Red Gauntlet, Vulcan, Doctor, Electricity, Star, Painter, Spark, Moonlight, St. Baldren, Whisperer, Nightingale, Superstition, and Mona. The Melbourne entries are not in. There are thirty-two entries for the Plying Handicap ; nine for the Steeplechase ; twenty-six for the Autumn Handicap ; thirty-nine for the Pree, and twenty-four for the Jockey Club Handicap. The general discipline of the troops at Sunbury is considered excellent, and a general order congratulates them. A new patent earth excavator has been tried with satisfactory results.
News has been received of the loss of the Bessie at Beagle Bay, West Australia. . Six lives were lost, including the master and his wife.
There are fifty-two nominations for the Derby and fifty for the Oaks. Gavan Duffy denounced the “ stonewalling ” tactics.
At Richmond the body of Henry Pyle, aged fifteen, who died of typhoid fever, remained four days uuburied, the mother being unable to bury it through poverty. The Mayor of Richmond ordered the Government undertaker to bury the body.
A man named James Ellis has been killed on the ©eniliquin railway.
