CHRISTCHURCH RACES.

BY TELEGRAPH. Chmstchurch, Tuesday. The Canterbury autumn meeting opened to-day. The weather was dull but fine, and there was a half holiday in Christchurch, but the attendance was small. Before the races commenced the Jockey Club held a meeting to further consider the Fishhook case, and it was resolved to disqualify Derritt, the rider of Fishhook, from riding where the Christchurch Jockey Club rules are in force during the pleasure of the club. There was not much speculating on the various events, the bookmakers doing less business than on any former occasion. Danebury and Middleton being scratched for the Leger the race became a match between Dead Heat and Puriri. This could only be expected from the Leger being run on the same day as the Autumn Handicap, but this will be altered next year, when the Leger will be run in Duuedin. The Champion Stakes was regarded as a moral for Bay’s Merille, which was taken in nearly every double that was laid. Trump Card and Jangler were next in favor. Both were in the pink of condition, and coming from Webb’s stable, were better supported than might otherwise have been the case. Webb declared to win with Trump Card, but the result went to show that Jangler was the best of the two. Oberon is a good colt, but his condition was not so good as it should have been. Tell Tale ran uncommonly well. She is a very nice filly. Foul Play is also one of the right sort in breeding, being the grandson of the famous Emma, the dam of Golden Cloud, but he was not in the best condition. The start was very bad, Merille being left almost at post; but considering the bad start, the race was a very good one throughout. Thirteen out of the seventeen acceptors came to tthe post for the great Autumn Handicap, and all were in best of condition, and gave promise of a fine race. Unfortunately the start was the worst over seen on the course. Danebury, Tattler, and Bribery got away with a good lead, and the others never closed up till nearing the bottom of the course. The great pot came off for once; Bribery, which was heavily backed, winning—though not without a smart tussle with Puugawerewere. Tattler carried off a good share of the public money, and ran splendidly, the way she came up in the last quarter mile being a treat to witness. Fallacy was backed for a fair amount, but cut up very badly in the race. Cloth of Gold, who came up at the bottom turn, was running well forward, when unfortunately he bolted off the course. Old Guy astonished every one by his running, and might, if required, have taken second place. Puriri ran well to the last turn for home, when his rider, seeing that Bribery, with which Bedwood had declared to win, was leading, pulled Puriri up. ST. LEGER STAKES Of 100 sovs. added to a sweepstake of 10 sovs each. Leger course. Fourteen subscribers. Mr. Redwood’s Puriri (Lyford) 1 Mr. Logan’s Dead Heat (Waddle) 2 Danebury and Middleton were scratched. Betting—s to 1 on Puriri. A good start was effected, but Puriri soon out out the running, and passing the stand led by

ten lengths. Dead Heat crept up along the back of the course, and Bribery being eased off in the straight Dead Heat got up to his quarters, when Puriri came away and won hands down by three lengths, Dead Heat hard ridden. Time 3min. SSAsec.

After two false starts, in which the colors of Foul Play and Jaugler were conspicuous, Sir. Fitzroy dismissed the youngsters in bad order. Oberon at once took the lead, with Foul Play, Tell Tale, Slerrille, and Jangler in the next division, with Trump Card, and Lady, bird in the rear. In this order they ran until the straight was reached, when Trump Card and Jaugler came out from the rest, with Tell Tale third, Merille and Foul Play close together, and the rest nowhere. Coming near the winning post Trump Card and Jangler wore all but neck and neck, and a good race ensued. Just on the post Trump Card won by a short head, Tell Tale third about a length off, Merille and Foul Play close together for fourth place, and the rest beaten off. Time, Imin. 22sec. GEEAT AUTUMN HANDICAP. Of 300 sovs., for three-year olds and upwards, added to a sweepstake of 10 sovs. each for acceptors. One and a halt miles. Betting : 4 to 1 against Danebury and Fallacy, 3 to 1 Punga, 2 to 1 Bribery, 8 to 1 Puriri and Templeton, 10 to 1 Guy. After a bolt on the part of Eclat, the lot went away by a wretched start, Bribery, Fallacy, and Danebury at once rushing in front, with the latter a leader, the rest gling at the back of the course. Bribery, look, the lead, with Fallacy, Punga, and Gfis ciu.-c up. In this order they ran to the straight, when Punga began to come, with Guy in close attendance. Bribery still led, and Punga got oa even terms with her, and began to race her. Redwood's filly had, however, the best of it, and Punga had to be content with second place by a length, old Guy well up for third. The Cloth, who looked dangerous in the straight, bolted off the course just before reaching the distance post. Danebury, lying behind, was pulled off at the distance post. Time—2min. 45Jsec. A Hack Race concluded the proceedings.
