HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the Hutt County Council was held yesterday afternoon. Present : The Chairman, and Councillors Speedy, Dick, Alonaghan, Smith, Morgan, Lancaster, and Chew.
It having been moved that the minutes be confirmed, CouncillorMoNAOHAN remarked that the Council had not acted legally in exempting a certain portion of the county from the operation of the Counties Act without having given notice to all the members. He pointed out that without giving notice to all the members, the Council had carried a motion, and therefore, in his opinion, the thing was illegal. After a short discussion, the Chairman said that no doubt an error had been committed, but he would take care that such a mistake would not occur again. In future due notice should be given of motions to rescind motions previously passed. The minutes were then confirmed. RECLAMATION. Councillor Monaghan moved that a deputation be appointed to wait upon the Government for the purpose of urging upon them the necessity of endowing the Hutt County with the land which was being reclaimed at present. His idea was to form a market place. He did not think the Government would object to give the reclaimed land as an endowment to the county. Councillor Lancaster was of opinion that it would be unwise to follow out the suggestion of Councillor Monaghan at present. Councillor Smith seconded the motion. He felt that there should be a market place in Wellington, and that the reclaimed land should be given as an endowment for the purpose of providing money to build the same. Councillor Morgan regarded the motion as premature, and therefore moved as an amendment, that the Chairman put himself in communication with the Government on the subject, and report to the Council at its next meeting. Councillor CHEW supported tho amendment The amendment was then put and carried. TOLLS. Tho Toll Committee reported that they had leased the Kaiwarra tollgate for one year fo £2300, and that a person had been put in charge of the Lower Hutt tollgate. ACCOUNTS.
