RIFLE MATCH.

The match arranged between the Greymouth Rifles and the Wellington Artillery, to be fired on Saturday, the 7th inst., was not completed on that day, owing to the inclement state of the weather here. Our local team were, however, enabled to fire on Saturday last, the weather being all that could be desired. The match was one of considerable interest, being the first in which carbines have been used against long rifles without points being given. The great success which attended the Wellington Artillery last year in matches with otlier corps gave some reason to hope that they would, notwithstanding the superior weapons in the hands of their opponents, prove themselves the victors, and we are glad to see that not only has this been realised, but that a wonderfully large majority has to be recorded in their favor. The total score made by the Wellington Artillery was 609, and that of the Greymouth Rifles, as telegraphed, 582, giving a majority of 27 for Wellington. It will be seen from the scores appended that the shooting of Bannister and AlcCredie was excellent, and indeed could scarcely be surpassed with the long rifle. The conditions of the match were as follows : Ranges, 200, 400, and 500 yards, 7 shots at each range ; target at 200 yards, 6x4 ; centre, 2ft. square ; and Sin. square bull’s-eye ; and second-class at the two latter ranges ; position
