The return match between the College Boys and the Masters was played yesterday afternoon on the Basin Reserve. There not being a sufficient number of masters to make an eleven, the masters, as on the former occasion, were assisted by a few friends, mostly parents of boys attending the College. The Masters, who went first to the wickets, knocked together 121 before their innings closed, towards which Reekie contributed 20 by “fluky” play. Wilson 13, Hardy 12, and Lloyd 52. The latter played well, though he ought to have been caught before he had made 30, and was bowled by Martin. In their first innings the Boys distinguished themselves by trying to see which could get out the quickest. . Martin made 8, , the only decent score, excepting 13 extras, and the innings closed for 38. The Boys went in again to save a one innings defeat, ard when time was called were 39 runs ahead of their opponents, for the loss of only six wickets. Brandon, Martin, and Morrah all played steadily for their scores of 48, 20, and 16 respectively, especially the first-named. As the match was not played out, the Masters won by a 3 runs on the first innings, though, had time allowed, the tables would most likely have been turned. The bowling of the Boys was poor, though their fielding generally was above the average. Doubtless their small score in the first innings may be attributed to “ new ” bowling, of which they were nervous. Appended are the scores :
