MANAWATU JOCKEY CLUB RACE MEETING.

Foxton, Wednesday. , The races came off to-day as follows : HURDLE BACK Of 25 sovs. Amon'a Arbitrator, aged (Laing) .. .. .. 1 Fraser’s St. A Ibana, aged (Campion) .. .. 2 Tupira’s Wairarapa, aged (Potts) .. .. ..3 ' There was a good start. St. Albans and Wairarapa took the first hurdle at the same time, Arbitrator following. At the second hurdle the order was Wairarapa, St. Albans, Arbitrator. At the last hurdle but . one St. Albans missed his footing in landing, and fell. Just as he was rising again Wairarapa took the hurdle and struck St. Albans, knocking him over and stunning his jockey (Campion). This brought Wairarapa to grief, for it caused him to stand on his head for a second or two, and shook his jockey, who, however, was not otherwise injured ; but the game old gelding was led away irreparably injured in the shoulder.' Scott’s Lady Mary, lyrs (Jenkins) .. .. 1 LymVs Hitpr-Miss, aged (Burr) .. .. .. 2 Anion's Harold, 4yrs (Amon) .. .. .. .. 3 Heta’s Nanakia, aged (Bansett) 0 Simpson’s Tapscott, syrs (Keeves) ... .. .. 0 Fraser’s Queen of Hearts, aged (Campion) .. .. 0 This was a very good race. The horses were well matched. Time, 3min. 12sec. Lady Mary, Harold, and Queen of Hearts led the way, closely followed by the others. Shortly after passing the post Queen of Hearts passed Harold, coming up with Lady Mary, the rest some way behind. Coming into the straight Harold changed, places with Queen of Hearts, Lady Mary leading well. Hit-or-Miss then put on a game spurt, and passing Harold, came in a good winner. HACK RACE. . . .. Heta’s Wild Man.., •• J Wilder's Anriio •• “ q Tupara's Henau .. o Eight started, but most of them were soon out of it. The race was decided in the two heats, Wild Man winning by a neck. MAIDEN PLATE. Of 30aova. T. V. Brown’s Te Wheturaarams, syxs (Loyd) .. 1 Barker’s Lucifer, 3yrs (A. Walker 2 McLachlan’s Merry Legs, aged (Heaton) .. ..3 Lynd’s Hit-or-Miaa, aged (Burr) ... .. .. 0 Wairarapa was entered, but owing to his accident was scratched. At starting the order of the running was Merrylegs, Hit-or-Mias, Lucifer, Te Whetu, which was kept up past the post aud continued for some distance. Lucifer and Te Whetumarana then drew out from the others, keeping well together to the finish, Te Whetnraarama winning by about two lengths. Time, 3min. 4sec. ladies’ purse, Of 20 sovs. It might be said this was no race, only two horses running. Owing, to the fate of Wairarapa, Pahako’s Parawhenua and Fraser’s St. Albans went round for the first heat, St. Albans winning so easily that Parawhenua declined contesting the second, -so St. Albans cantered round alone. Time of first heat, 3min. Ssec. PONT RACE. Liddell’s Pet (Walker) 1 Marraki’s Terurft • ..2 Purcell’s Tui (Barr) .. .. .. .. 3 This was one of the best contested races of the day, Pet winning only by a head. Time, 2 min. 6seo. MANAWATU STAKES Of 75 sovs. Two and a half miles. D. Scott’s Ouida, 4yr«(Atkins) .. .. .. 1 Hayward’s Ada, Byrs (Brlnner) 2 D. Scott’s Haphazard, 4yrs (Jenkins) .. .. 3 Baker's Lucifer, 3 years (Walker) 0 Kansfield’s Clymenus, aged (Gillies).. .. .. 0 This race was first-rate, an honestly contested event, the order of running being repeatedly changed, Clymenus, Ada, and Haphazard leading. Then Lucifer stepped out and led past the post, followed by Clymenus and Haphazard. Half way round Ada drew up and took third place. At the second time of passing the post the order was Lucifer, Ada, Haphazard, and Ouida close behind Clymenus. In the last round Ouida gradually drew up, passed Haphazard, and collared Ada, with whom she had a good race up the straight. Ouida won’ by three lengths. Time/ smir. Bsec.
CONSOLATION STAKES, HANDICAP. ®ay wood's Ada, Syr* (Walker) 1 Fraser'* Haphazard, 4yr* (Atkins) .. ... 2 Pokako’s Parswhemia, aged(Brinner) • ..3 Bansfield's Clymenus, aged (Gillot) .. .. 0 This and a Hack Pony Race finished the best, quickest, and in every respect the most satisfactory meeting that has been held here.Not a drunken man did I see on the courae. The owners of the horses and the jockeys all gave great praise to the stewards for the way in which tilings were managed. The day is to be wound up by a grand ball, to celebrate the opening of the -Foxton Public Hall.
