A New Zealand Gazette received last night contains a notification as to the resignation of Edward Pearce, Esq., of his seat in the House of Representatives for the e'ectoral district of Wellington City. During the past seven days, 13 sailing vessels and 16 steamers entered at the Customs, whose tonnage amounted to 4398 tons. The tonnage of the steamers was 3636 tons, and that of the sailing vessels 762 tons. The number of vessels that cleared out during the same period numbered 41, whose tonnage combined amounted to 11,518 tons. Twenty of these were sailing vessels, registering altogether 5921 tons, and the 21 steamers showed a combined carrying capacity of 5597 tons. The Magistrate's Court is a rare place for hearing Becrets of domestic life, and the pictures sometimes presented are anything but attractive. Yesterday an application was made by a worn in named Sarah Green for a protection order against her husband, William Green. As showing the style of life they led, the wife stated that she had been married to her William for twenty-three years, and that he was frequently drunk, and had a habit of ill-using her. Defendant was ordered to pay £1 a week for the support of his family, the conditions of a property protection order to be observed. In a New Zealand Gazette of March the Bth is published a comparative return of the number of telegrams forwarded, revenue received, and the value of the General Government telegrams transmitted for the quarters ending 30th September, 1875 and 1876. In the month of October, 1876, the number of telegrams forwarded decreased to the extent of 7327 ; but during the last two months of the quarter there was an increase of 34,319, and the increase of cash revenue received was £1591 165.; the decrease in the month of October amounting to £6Ol 16s. lid. There was a decrease in the value of Government telegrams transmitted during the first two months of the quarter-of 1876, £4ll 4s. 10d.; but the last month (December) shows an increase of £709 55. : 10d. A cricket match will be played on Saturday next in Mrs. Leitch's paddock between,.the painters and builders of this city. . The teams selected are as follow :—For the painters : Messrs. Turner; W. Tustin, W. G. Tustin, C. Godber, G. Godber, W. Tinney, J. Tinney, J. Evans, McMurrain, H.'Whyte, aridS. Roberts; emergency—J; Tustin' and' Blud. For the builders: Messrs. Rountree, Smith, i Mcintosh,r -Menzie, Nealy, Prideaux, Murdoch, Lockland, Furness,'Burrett, and'J. Howard ; emergency—Na'se and Parsonage. . At the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, before J. C. Crawford, Esq., R.M., John Kershaw was charged with having committed a breach of the prison regulations. He pleaded not guilty. Thos. Chillern, a warder at the gaol, stated that he was in charge of the hard labor gang on the Terrace on Thursday, when defendant went along and threw a pieee of tobacco to the prisoners as they were at work. Alfred Adams,,another warder, stated that he, by the last witness's orders, went after defendant and arrested him. Defendant stated that he was pulling his handkerchief out of his pocket when,the tobacco fell out; Mr.Micaiah Read stated that defendant had only been dischargedfrom the gaol on Friday morning, ap.d as he was going out a note from another prisoner to somebody outside was found inside his boot. His Worship considered the charge proved, and fined defendant 10s. or forty-eight hours' imprisonment, at the same time warning him that 'next time he offended in a similar way he" would be liable to a penalty of £2O, or three months' imprisonment.—A case of alleged assault and one of larceny, in which two small boys were charged with stealing some firewood, .were dismissed. —There were only a few small civil cases, of no public interest.

A melancholy case of sudden death occurred in Taranaki-street shortly after noon yesterday. It appears that James Taylor, late chief cook oh board the s.s. Wanaka, was seen to knock several times at the door of Captain Mundle's house; but the house was empty, the family (with whom he was intimate) being out of town for this day. He then walked to the end "ef the verandah, and leaned for a few minutes' over the : railing, and afterwards turned back, when it was noticed that he suddenly staggered and fell down. Some people'who saw him fall at once hastened to his assistance, and tried every means to revive him. Dr. Munro was at once sent for, but when"he'arrived life was extinct. Constable McCaußland, who was soon on the spot, conveyed the body to the Morgue, where an inquest vail be held to-morrow. The'deceased was about forty years of age, and is believed to have a wife and family in Taranaki. This afternoon the return match between the Kising Star and Hutt cricket clubs will be played on the Basin Eeserve. The following are the names of the Rising Star team: —Messrs. Smith (captain), Danks, Kibblewhite, Godber, Singer, Tustin, Mansill, Brown, Helyer, Bead, and Rae; emergency, White. There is now on view at Mr. Cohen's, Willisstreet, a very handsome fifteen-day dock,, which is*' to be presented by the Wellington Rowing Club to Mr. James Walker, captain of the champion crew at the late Nelson regatta. Mr. Walker received a similar presentation last year. The number of passengers who arrived in the port of Wellington by sea during the past seven days numbered 250. Of these 129 came from Northern ports, 111 from the South, and 10 from Australia. The Chicago Minstrels continue to draw well. There will be an entire change of programme this evening.

Several appeals against the city valuation will be heard at the Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday next. A special excursion by the Manawatu to the Wanganui Races is announced. The steamer .leaves on Monday at 3 p.m.—the return'fare being £2 10s. Hugh Horsley Beetham, Esq., has been appointed a member of the Licensing Court for the district of Masterton, vice W. H. Beetham, Esq., J.P. The Theatre Royal was fairly attended last evening, notwithstanding the attraction alsewhere- To-night " The Octoroon" will be produced. A brilliant meteor was observed at Wanganui and Opunake at about 8.30 p.m. on Thursday. It lasted about twenty seconds, and passed from about north to south. His Excellency the Governor has been pleased to accept the resignation of Richard Chilman, Esq., of his appointment as auditor of the public accounts for the provincial district of Taranaki.
