KARORI-MAKARA HIGHWAY BOARD.

A meeting was held at the old schoolhonse, Karori, on Saturday. Present ; Messrs. C. C. Graham (chairman), Wright, Cook, Bowler, and Page. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Sundry notices of appeal against rating were received, and the'valuer was instructed to appear at the Assessment Court and support the present valuation. A letter was received from the Treasury, stating that the subsidy for six months ending 30th June, 1877, would be based on the present valuation under the Rating Act 1870. An abstract of accounts from the Wellington Highway Board was received, showing that £SO 7s. 6d. to the credit of this Beard had been paid into the bank ; also, that £56 ss. was charged as the Board’s share of contingencies from the Ist July, although the separation had taken place in June. The chairman was instructed to protest most strongly against such a charge. It was stated that Mr. Williams refused to allow the gorse to be cut on the road-line through his property. The chairman was authorised to take such steps as might be thought necessary by the Board’s solicitor. The attention of the Board was called to the serious nuisance caused by the overspreading of gorse on the roads. It was decided to take no step for the present until it rvas seen what course the County Council should take with regard to the roads within the Board.

A letter was read from Mr. J. C. Crawford asking for a grant in aid of road leading to the pilot station. Resolved, —That Air. Crawford be asked to forward an estimate of the probable cost of the necessary works. Sundry accounts were passed. Estimates for filling in the gully at the Botanical Gardens bridge were produced, when the chairman was authorised to suggest a modification of the plan proposed by Mr. C. O’Neill, and call for tenders, to be considered at next meeting. The Clerk was directed to call the attention of the Town Clerk of Wellington to the former communication on the subject of the Evans Bay road. It was decided ta call for tenders for the maintenance of the road between the town belt and the Patent Slip, at the north gate, and from the said gate to the town boundary at Oriental Bay. Authority was granted to Messrs. Page and Bowler to have certain culverts, said to be in an unsafe condition, attended to at once. The contractor’s attention was ordered to be called to a dangerous hole in the road at the junction of the South Karori and Mhkara roads ; also to the amount of gorse at.present overhanging the road in many places. The meeting then adjourned.
