WELLINGTON JOCKEY CLUB MEETING.
■ ♦ ,' A meeting of stewards of the Wellington jockey Club was held at the Empire "Hotel .VJaatevening at 8 o'clock. Present—Messrs. i -G.< Hunter (in the chair), A. Young,;. J. Martin, E. Fearce, J. Paul, J. McDowell, W. Dr. Diver, and Mr. Kerby, hon. FBELIMnUBY BUSINESS. Among the matters considered was the adjTißabflity of increasing the amount of the ; prize in connection with the Wellington Cup next year, and it was decided to make it £SOO, : being £2OO in advance of the prize recently run for here, and as large as that given in Ihinedin. This will be hailed with satisfaction all sporting men, and should be sufficiently attractive to induce a large number of entries ; Bextyear. •'■"' 'Nominations for the Wellington Derby for T IB7B and 1879 were also received, being 25 and 22 respectively. We shall be able to give the names of the horses so soon as the list is ■ completed. This concluded the business of the preliminary meeting. ;.,-..-.=> - -PAYMENT OF STAKES. The arrangements made by the stewards and their really excellent - secretary, Mr. Kerby, were in every respect • admirable; the handicaps were all well considered, and that they generally gave satia- ; faction the number of acceptances proved; no protests were issued, and the accidents and casualties were trivial. Weather alone was against the financial success of the meeting, but that was a matter rather beyond the powers of the stewards to arrange ; and all that can be done is to hope for better luck ' next time.
