The sister of Curtin, the condemned murderer, visited him yesterday, and is getting up a petition to the Governor for his reprieve. Curtin belongs to a respectable family of farmers, County Clare. The whaleboat for the Thames and Auckland crew at Nelson goes per Wellington tomorrow. Mr. Johnson, of Wellington, presides at the Templar entertainment this evening. Speight, late G.W.C. The Presbyterian Synod deveted the whole of yesterday's sitting, extending over eight hours, to the discussion of the question of in-, strumental rnusic, which came up on petition from the Oamaru Presbytery, praying the Synod to rescind its decision of last year on the subject, and to send down: an overture to Presbyteries and Kirk sessions. The ultimate decision of the Synod was a resolution, on the .motion of the I-ev. Mr. Finlayson, declining to accede to the action of the Oamaru Presbytery, and declaring that no definite command is claimed for the übo of instrumental music in Christian worship, nor is such music to be regarded as an essential part of worship, but is merely permitted as an aid,in sustaining the voices of the. congregation while engaged in the service of praise. Timabp, Saturday. There is great excitement about the heavy assessment of rateable property in the borough. A meeting of 500 burgesses was held last night to protest against the action of the Borough Council. Resolutions were passed in ravor of resisting the levying of the rate.Much indignation is caused by the Borough Council determining to spend £1369 in a town hall without the consent of the ratepayers. _ • Judge Ward gave an important decision yesterday as to architects' charges. West,
architect, sued Cramond, coach proprietor, for £66, commission on £2750, the amount of lowest tender received for dwelling-house of which plaintiff had drawn plans, but which had not been built. Cramond proved that he . had only instructed West to draw plans of a house' to cost £I2OO, or £ISOO at most. The Judge decided that the plans of the house should revert to Cramond, and gave judgment for defendant, with costs. In the case Suttoa v. Dunn, a well-to-do farmer had turned his wife out of doors, and advertised that l/ey would- not be responsible for her deb'ts. > However, she got credit up to £42 for ne<ies- \ saries,; for.which Dunn was sued. A capital race in the last round between- the first and second horses, Camilla finishing about three lengths ahead.
