(PEK PRESS AGENCY.) Auckland, Saturday. A flaxdresser named Leathan, at the Queen's redoubt, has been struck dead by lightning., He had got put into an open field. Death was instantaneous.. Fifteen cases, supposed to be tobaoco, shipped to order under the signature of E. Wood, Melbourne, arrived by the brigantine Florinda. No owner was found, and on opening the cases it was discovered that they were filled with sand. ' It is supposed they had been shipped with the object of obtaining an advance from some bank in Melbourne; ’ At the Remuera cattle fair to-day the show of stock was much superipr to that at the last fair.' New Plymouth, Saturday. At a meeting held last night, at which Messrs. Carrington and Kelly were present, it was resolved that as the New Zealand Titanic Steel and Iron Company have failed in the due performance of the terms and conditions of the lease granted to them, it is desirable that the Government be at once urged to dbmand payment of the penalties, and, if not paid, to cancel the lease. That copies of the resolution passed be forwarded to Wellington. Picton. Saturday., Woodgate was brought up on at Pioton. His niece Susan deposed to having had two children by him. The first was born dead; the second she heard cry. Woodgate alone delivered her. He said before and after the birth that he would smother it, and threatened to shoot her if she told anyone. She never saw the child after. The other niece was not examined. The prisoner was remanded till next Saturday. He cohabited with his brother’s widow for years..
