OPENING OF THE BOATING SEASON.
Tho rowing season wa3 inaugurated on Saturday by a serins of scratch matches, under the auspices of the Star Rowing Club. The throe clubs all put in an appearance, and working harmoniously together, a very good show was made. Six crews entered for the Scratch Races, and the various heats resulted as follows, viz. ; FIRST HEAT. Johnson.. .. stroke Taylor.. .. sl r °he Odivler .. .. No. 3 Floyd .. .. No. 3 Van .. .. No. 2 James .. .. No. . J. Bishop .. bow Leckle .. ■ ; bow This was a very fair race. Johnson’s crew won by about one and a-half lengths. SECOND HEAT. Webb •.. .. stroke Gair .. .. stroke Gandy .. .. No. 3 Lynch .. .. No. 3 Hunter .. .. No. 2 Cuirie .. .. No. 2 Morpeth.. .. bow A. .. bow - Xhis was a very close race. Gair s crew bad a slight lead at the start, but was ultimately beaten by half a length. THIRD HEAT. Eyton .. . . stroke Batkin .. .. stroke Howard .. .. No 3 Macdonald .. No. 3 Knapp .. •• No. 2 Harrs .. : .. No. 2 Rjundtroa .. bow McLean .. bow This was a good race for about half the distance, but Eyton’s crew—who rowed in bfar the best form—won rather easily by about two lengths. FOURTH HEAT. Johnson’s craw (winners Webb’s crew (winners of of Ist heat.) 2nd heat.) This was a good race till within about 150 yards from the wharf, when Johnson’s crew forged ahead. After reaching the wharf, Webb eased off, leaving the winning crew to paddle in alone. The final heat between Johnson s crew and Eyton's will be rowed early this week, when a very close race may be expected. It will be seen that there are three Star Boating Club menandone Port Nicholson Rowing Club man in Johnson’s crew, and two of each of the above clubs in Eyton’s. In the evening the members of the Star Boating Club had a dinner at the Empire Hotel, his Worship the Mayor in the chair. The club was largely represented, and a very pleasant evening was spent. The dinner was excellently served up by Mr. Xiightschiendel, The party broke up about half-past ten, well pleased with so pleasant a wind up to a good day’s sport.
