Preeth’s Satellite, 6 years; Dr. Earl's Sailor, 4 years; D. Musson’s Patrick, 3 years; Wm. Handley’s Flora McDonald, 4 years; W. Wilson’s Iniquity, 6 years. Dunedin, Tuesday. Forty-three members have resigned membership in the Young Men’s Christian Association on account of the black-balling of the Rev. Mr. Pitchett. The South Dunedin Council have resolved to borrow £IOOO, and St. Hilda £2OOO. A conference of suburban road boards is convened for the purpose of discussing the extension of tramways. The Anglican Diocesan Synod opens on Wednesday. Westport, Tuesday. An action in the R, M. Court, brought by the police against the proprietor of the theatre here for allowing dancing, in contravention of clause 41 of the Licensing Act of 1874, was dismissed, the Court ruling that without proof of hiring girls to dance with men to excite them to drink no action would hold. This is the first case of the kind since the Act was passed. LATER ENGLISH NEWS. London, October 20. There was a rumor of prospects of war, which caused a panic on the Stock Exchange. Foreign stocks fell heavily, especially Russian. All Rome securities suffered much. Consols dropped one and a half, and are quoted at 94. Colonial debentures slightly affected. Price of money stiffening. Bank reserve of specie has been reduced to about nineteen millions. The wool demand has increased, at a slight advance on August closing rates. Continental inquiry brisk. Wheat firm; New Zealand, 455. to 51s. New Zealand flax firm. The charge for the transit of the mails between New York and San Francisco has been largely increased. Lord Lisgar, Governor-General of Canada, is dead. The ship Hurunui, with immigrants for New Zealand, is detained at Plymouth, having scarlatina and diphtheria on board. Arrived : Euterpe.
