She left Melbourne on the 12th, and experienced strong south-easterly weather, with heavy head-sea. She brings 47 saloon and 23 steerage passengers, 425 tons cargo for all ports, and 166 rams. The Arawata sails at 4 p.m. to-morrow. Passengers for Wellington—Messrs. Hillsden, Cheynol, 4 steerage, and 35 tons cargo, NELSON. Wednesday. Arrived: Charles Edward, from Wellington, early. AUCKLAND, Wednesday. The New Zealand Insurance Company has received the following telegram from GisborneThe Pretty Jane has settled down in the sand. The compartment is (nil of water, and her bottom is much damaged. The only appliances wo have for raising her are tanks and casks. Send Californian pumps, and a centrifugal if yon can get one. The captain wants to condemn and abandon her. The cargo is all out, but is much damaged. The A.S.P. formally gave notice of abandonment yesterday afternoon, but the insurance offices re-, fused to accept the abandonment, and are sending men and appliances to the assistance of the vessel by the s.s. Southern Cross, which left this afternoon for Gisborne and Napier. Captain Chrisp, harbor-master of Gisborne, who has been in Auckland the last few days, also returns by the Southern Cross. Only a ■mall portion of the cargo is insured. The loss will fall in some cases on the shippers, and in others on the consignees who take delivery on board the boat. LYTTELTON, Wednesday. Sailed; Alhambra, for the South, at 5.30 p.m. PORT CHALMERS, Wednesday. Sailed: Australia. Passenger for Wellington— Mr. B. Follarton. The s.s. Stormbird. Captain Doile, from Wanganui, arrived here yesterday, at 10.45 a.m. She left Wanganui at 9.30 p.m. onTnesday, crossed the bar at 10.15 p.m., and arrived here as above. Fine weather was met with. The Stormbird leaves here to-day for Wanganui, The s.s. Easby sailed yesterday at noon for Newcastle and Sydney. ,■. ’,. The Government steamer flinemoa is now on the Patent Slip, and those interested in marine architecture have an excellent opportunity of viewing her handsome lines. She is expected to be launched to-morrow. The s.s. Arawata will arrive here about Saturday morning from Melbourne via the South, with an Aus-, tralian mall on. board, but not the Suez mail, which comes in the Ringarooraa by way of the West Coast. The Arawata is advertised to sail again for Melbourne via the South on the 22nd. She will take the outward Suez mail, which closes at the Post Office at 7 p.m. on Saturday. „ . , . The 8.8. Australia will arrive here on Friday forenoon, and sail again daring the day for San Francisco via intermediate ports, taking the outward English and American mails. ; >
The sis. Taupo will sail for Southern ports at 3 p.m. to-day. ■ . : The Union Company's steamer Hawea, from Southern ports, arrived at the wharf at 1 p.m. yesterday. She left Port Chalmers at 4 p.m. on the 16th, and arrived at Lyttelton at 10 &.m. on the 17th; sailed at 6.15 p.m. same day, and arrived here as above. Light head winds to Lyttelton were experienced, and thence till arrival a strong nor'-wester.. The Hawea will sail for Northern ports at 7 o'clock this morning. The s.s. Tul, from the West Coast, arrived here late on Tuesday night. She will go on the SHptq-day, and come off in time to sail for Kaikoura and Lyttelton to-morrow.. . . . _
The steamer Kiwi arrived here from the East Coast last evening at 7.30 o'clock, with 300 bales of wool on board. She left Napier on Friday last at soon, and arrived off Pourere at 5.30 p.m. same day. Next morning a southerly wind with heavy sea came on, and she was obliged to rntt back to the Kidnappers, where she anchored same day. Got under way on Sunday morning, and was off Pourere again at noon; landed a hydraulic woolpress, and took on board 300 bales wool; left again at 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday. Had fine weather as far as Falliser; thence till arrival here as above strong, northerly wind. Passed the Rangatira off Uretl at 3 u’clock yesterday morning/ The Kiwi is advertised to sail, again for the East Coast to-day.

f The s.s. Napier left Foxton at 9 a.m. yesterday : towed the schooner Clio out, bound for Moeraki, and crossed the bar at 10.30 a.ro. Experienced N.W. winds til! arrival. On the way down she touched at Kaplti, where she delayed two hours. She will leave for Foxton this evening. The Union Co.'s s.s. Taupo, Captain Carey, from Northern ports, arrived here last'nlgbt at 11 o’clock. She left the Manukan at 4.90 p.m. on the 16th ; arrived off New Plymouth at fi am. on the 17th, sailed two hours afterwards, and.mode Nelson at 8 p.m. same day ; left at 9 o'clock next morning, and was in Ficton at 4.80 in the afternoon; sailed at 6.30, and arrived here as above. Fine weather was experienced throughout. '
