It will be remembered that the Waipa arrived here in April last with immigrants and cargo, on discharge of which she sailed for Lyttelton, where she loaded for London. The steamer Stormbird, Captain Doile, left Wanganuiats.3o p.m. on Thursday, crossed the bar at 6 p m., and arrived here at 6 o'clock yesterday morning. Had a head wind all the way. She will return to Wanganui this afternoon, .... , , ~ , The ship Midlothian commenced taking in ballast yesterday. . . ~ ~ The barqe Malay, Captain Millman, arrived off the Heads yesterday morning from Newcastle with a cargo of coal, but owing to the very heavy northerly gale blowing she came to an anchor inside the Heads. It is stated to be Captain Cochrane's intention to sell the schooner Shepherdess. _■.._, The brigantineHannahßroomfleld, Captain Dawson, timber laden from Kaipara, arrived here yesterday at The topsail schooner Oreti. Captain Nelson, left Wanganui on Tuesday. Had light southerly winds, with calms, till Thursday, when it freshened up from the northward and fetched her into port, She armed here yesterday morning. The Tui's dep:ffture for Foxton has been postponed till to-day. . T The E M s.s. City of Sydney arrived at Lyttelton at 7.30 a.m. yesterday, and left again at 9 a.m. for Port Chalmers As there was afresh north-east breeze blowing at Port Chalmers yesterday, which would set the sea right on the bar/ there is a possibility of the steamer not being able to get in. The steamer Easby, Captain Kennedy, arrived here yesterday at 1 p.m. from Southern ports. She left Port Chalmers at 4.45 p.m. on the.l2th: experienced light northerly winds with thick weather to Banks' Peninsula, and arrived at Lyttelton at 3 p.m on the 12th ; left at 3.30. p,m. on the 14th, and had head winds till arrival as above. She is advertised to sail for Newcastle direct this afternoon at 2 o'clock _ The ketch Falcon arrived from Blenheim yesterday morning. She left Greymouth on Thursday, 14th inst., at C a.m.; arrived off the BuUerat 12.30 p.m., crossed the bar at 315 p.m.; left three hours afterwards, but meeting the schooner Zior, from this port with a cargo of railway iron, made fast and brought her in; crossed the bar for the fourth time on one tide at 7.30 p.m.; made Cape Fairwell at 7 a.m. on Friday; passed Stephens Island at 1 p.m.; was off the Heads at 7.15, and arrived here as above. Experienced a strong northwest gale with a heavy sea running. Made the run from Weßtport to this port in a little over twentyfour hours. She brings a quantity of coal and several passengers, and is advertised to sail for Kaikoura and Lyttelton this day. ' The s s Kiwi was to have left hero for Fluxbourne at an early hour this morning if the wind moderated. An inquiry was held at the Customhouse yesterday, before Mr McKellar, Collector of Customs, into the cause of the stranding of the schooner Shepherdess in Worser Bay. The evidence of her master. Captain T H J Billy was taken as follows :—I am master of the schooner Shepherdess. I hold a captain's certificate. I left the anchorage in Wellington harbor on Sunday morning last at half-past 8 o clock with the wind from the southward— light breeze. At about half-past one o'clock, when the vessel was standing on the port tack to the westward, just Inside the onter rock shemissedstays when going about. The wind thendied away to a calm; there was a heavy swell setting in at the time. I tried to wear her round but she refused. I next attempted to back her off. fehe went-clear of the rock almost within a few inches, when she struck with her forefoot, not heavily, just one chop down. I filled on her than, and ran through Chaffer s Passage, where I wore her round, not having room before. I stood to the eastward, thinking sho had sustained no damage. Sounded the pumps, and found that she was making water. Went down below, and found the water covering her skin. Kept her away, and the wind being light I ran her ioto Worser Bay, not being safe to go on to Wellington, and beached her abreast of the pilot station, where 1 landed everything perishable. The pilot came and rendered all the assistance he could. The s.s. Moa came out to tow us in, but did not consider it safe to do so. Monday night the water was baled out, and the Moa lashed alongside. After towing about ten minntes, the key of the propeller came out, and tho vessel was beached again. She was floated off and brought round to Wellington under canvas on Thursday morning. Pilot Holmes and one of his men came in with us. About four feet of the stem was knocked out when she Btruck. The tide was making about half a knot per hour at the time, and with the swell setting in, it would have been wrong to let go an anchor.' If I did so she would have dragged right down on the rock and smashed to pieces. There is a great depth of water there. The vessel was uninsured. She is built of hardwood, and the damage is not very serious.—ll enry Cole, one of the seamen, corroborated the captain's evidence.-The decision come to has not yet been made public.
From Lyttelton papers to hand, we have particulars of the righting of the'ketch Clematis by Captain E. Wood on Tuesday morning. The vessel, on being turned over, presented a very forlorn appearance, with the mizzen broken off about four feet above the deck, mainmast gone entirely from the stepping, and bowsprit carried away close to the cap. The bulwarks and stanchions' on the starboard side from midships forward were also carried away. Every particle of rigging and canvas was entirely gone, and thechainplatcsall more or less broken. The wheel and surrounding portions of the vessel were missing, and among the debris were found two thwarts belonging to the boat. Some of the hatches were gone, the others being stove in. "The'winch, etc., of the centreboard was also gone. A water cask, harness cask, one anchor, and some planks, that were part of the vessel's deck load, were all that remained on deck. Down below it was found that all. the berths in the cabin had been carried away, and all' that was found in the way of personal property- was a silver watch with gold chain attached; which was hanging on a hook under a shelf, a parallel rnlflr, bundle of knives and forks, a half crown and florin, and a pair of binocular gl«*«e». Undwiitalh the floor oX th« eabla,
in the lazaretto, was found the body of a man, lying face, downward,, and with.on y a pair, of oilskin troiisbra on.- 1 The body was taken: charge of by_the ™S™nd Conveyed In a shell to tho Morgue The berths in thVforocastlo were all, Intact, and some clothes and a leather portmanteau Were foiind down there,"-but ao trace, whatever of'anymore bodies. Tho raltUation; of \tho unfortunate man who was found in her, before ho died, must have been fearful in • the extreme, and ho must havo made a desperate struggle for dear life before tho air where he was became exhausted, as marks on the ceiling near the keelson above where the body was found showed that ho attempted to cut through tho planks and so escape from his living toinb. The vessel is now in the hands of the underwriters, and will be offered for sale. NOTICE TO MARINERS The following appears In Thursday's Gazette:— ■ New Harhor, Trinity Bay. The following information, relative to the new harbor in Trinity Bay, has been recoived from tho Harbor Master at Port Hinchinbrook. ...... In the channol over the bar there Is 9 feet at low water, with a rise of 12 feet at springs. -. ~,... t . To enter, bring tho eastern head of the river mouth to bear S. by W. J W., and steer that course. When within about one mile of the heads the water will deopen to 4 fathoms, which depth will be carried into the river. ' ' „ „ G. P. Heath, Commander, R.N., Portmaster.
