THE ITALIAN IMMIGRANTS.
TO J. F. E. WRIGHT, ESQ., PER FAVOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —I had the pleasure of reading in the Times some days ago the right objection you kindly made against Mr. Eliott's incorrect opinion of the Italian immigrants expressed in his Annual Immigration Report. I particularly feel extremely obliged to you for the generous testimony of esteem you bear on our behalf, having already enjoyed of the precious influence of your words ; and so I expect it will be for the rest of my countrymen, who altogether join with mine their expressions of gratitude, finding themselves somewhat relieved from the great disappointment they met with on their arrival in this country. This is the very object of your kind letter alluded to, and which I hope will at last be taken into good consideration by a good many of your respectable countrymen, by following your generous example, and trying the remaining Italians still disengaged. Then it will be seen whether they display good disposition to work or not, and so be able to provide for themselves. But, as it is easily understood, their further remaining workless hurts rather than otherwise their already offended character, while I am sure if they were encouraged by generous employers such as you they would do all in their power to merit and render themselves worthy of the satisfaction of their generous benefactors. Your judgment -would then be widely approved. This represents the token of affection and gratitude of the Italianstowardßyou.—lam,&c, Emlio Eranci Guadagnoli, Arrived by the Fritz-Reuter. Wellington, 14th September.
