A SUGGESTION.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES.' j ',' Sir,—The bluestone which is found-at the back of the Tinakori range and elsewhere is stated on good authority to be slightly auriferous, to the extent perhaps of a pennyweight' or two to the ton. It would evidently not pay to crush this stone, even supposing it to contain a much greater quantity of gold, but might it not be worth while to test the soft stuff connected with it, derived from the decomposition of the softer parts of the rock ? This, if found to be auriferous, might possibly pay to sluice. Microscopic gems have been found in washings near Wellington. Where small gems are found larger ones may perhaps be expected. They might be looked for at the same time. The above remarks will also apply to the locality of the recent discovery of indications of gold at the Waiwetu, and to many other places.—l am, &c, X.
