(per press agency.) New Plymouth, Monday. The Taranaki footballers are much disappointed at the Canterbury team going past without calling. They have been telegraphed to at Nelson, Taranaki offering to pay expenses if they will return by the next steamer. Nelson, Monday. In the Interprovincial Football Match today the Nelson team were overweighted and overmatched altogether. They played well, but Canterbury was far too strong. Canterbury's score was 30, Nelson none. Two gaols were scored, the rest tries and forcedowns. The two teams dine at six. The Hawea sails at seven.
Hokitika, Monday. There was a terrific gale last night. Several shop fronts were blown in. Windows, roofs, and fences were destroyed in all directions.. The Albion, from Sydney, has been ordered to proceed to Nelson. A man named Rody Hanahan has been seriously injured at the Kumara. A tree fell across him while in bed in his tent at ten o'clock last night. He was brought into town by his mates this afternoon and conveyed to the hospital. Lyttemon, Monday.
Two attempts were made to-day to shift the Clematis, but owing to the gear carrying away operations were suspended until to-morrow morning. Poet Chalmers, Monday.
The way Haughton was arrested was, that not leaving per the Taranaki as it was supposed ho would, the police were on the alert. He lay perdu last night, and walked down the line from Dunedin, intending to escape by a sailing vessel or the Ringarooma. It was reported yesterday that he had effected his escape by the Canny Scot, for Newcastle. Dunedin, Monday. A proposal is afoot to start a public Abattoir Company. The entries for both poultry shows are large.
Steele has obtained a lease of the Princess Theatre.. The Queen's will be closed after Saturday. C. E. Haughton was arrested this morning at Port Chalmers on warrant, charging him with being about to leave the colony with the view of evading justice. It was supposed he was attempting to leave in one of the sailing vessels.
Bail has been refused for Haughton, who is remanded to Wellington in custody. Horan, the post-office clerk charged with stealing papers from the Post-office, was acquitted, there being no evidence of felonious intention.
The Standard Insurance annual meeting was held to-day," when the report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. A recommendation of the report was that a divideud of 6d. per share for the half-year should bo declared, and carried to credit of capital account, which would make shares then stand at 12s. 6d. paid up; 40 per cent, of the surplus to be carried to cradit of reserve fund; 30 per cent, to be paid to policy holders in the company whose accounts show a credit balance for the preceding twelve months; the remaining 30 per cent, to be also carried to reserve fund. The capital would then stand at £31,250, and the reserve fund at £SBIO.
