Mk. Gillon, as the women say, is "shilly shallying " with the gas question. First of all he was entirely in favor of forming a new company, then he proposed in the City Council that the works of the existing company should be purchased by the Corporation, and that the preliminary expenses of the proposed new company should be paid by the city. By this means he hoped to get out of the difficulty of offending his patrons on either hand. But now that an agitation is got up against the purchase of the Wellington Gas Company's property he is prepared to become "as he was before he was ;" and accordingly, at yesterday's sitting of the City Council, he gave notice to move what would practically amount to a renunciation of all that ho had previously said. This mode of procedure may seem quite proper to Mr. Gillon, as enabling him to say something on both sides of the question, and eventually to act in the middle ; but we scarcely think it will bo found quite so satisfactory to the ratepayers of To Aro Ward, who, not being all Mr. Gillons, are likely to possess individually tolerably fixed opinions on the matter. Perhaps Mr. Gixlon anticipated the result of last night's meeting, and tabled his resolution in order to change his coat in time.
