r The R.M.S. Eealandia, Captain Ferries, arrived from Southern ports at 8 o'clock ycsterdrfy. By some means or other the pilot was missed outside, and the steamer had to come into harbor in charge of the captain. In bringing her alongside the wharf Captain Ferries showed the complete mastery he has over his vessel. Despite her extraordinary length, and consequent difficulty to handle, she was brought alongside without the slightest accident, taking a fine sweep round the harbor and coming alongside like a boat of much smaller dimensions. During the day thousands of visitors boarded her, Inspecting her magnificent cabin accommodation and internal fittings. She left the wharf shortly after 4 p.m. for Napier, Auckland, Kandavau, Honolulu, and San Francisco. The following is her report from Port Chalmers:— Left at 5.30 p.ra. on Wednesday, and arrived at Lyttelton at 8 o'clock next morning; sailed again at 5.30 p.m., and arrived off Wellington Heads at 7.30 yesterday morning. She experienced fine weather throughout. The ketch Forest Queen, from the Sound, timber laden, arrived here yesterday morning. She left on Monday, and hod fine southerly weather across. The steamer Stormblrdtook her departure for Wanganui yesterday at 8 p.m. The schooner Star of the Sea arrived here yesterday afternoon from Pelonxs Sound. The barque Edwin Bassett, from Newcastle, with a cargo of coala for Captain Williams, arrived hero last night at 10.30. She left Newcastle on the Bth inst., and had fine weather throughout. We understand that the barque Edwin Bassett and the brig Robin Hood are to be recoppered hero. The Edwin Bassett goes on the slip has soon as she is discharged, and the Robin Hood will bo taken up on her next trip from Newcastle. The s.s.'Matau left Dunedin on Tuesday, the 22nd inst., at 6 p.m., and arrived at Lyttelton on the 23rd at 5.30 p.m.; left next day at 7.30 p.tn.; and arrived at Kaikoura on the 25th at 0.15 a.m.j proceeded North at 9.20 a.m., and arrived hero at 9.15 p.m. Had fine weather up, with a strong northerly breeze from Kaikoura.
The return match between the two fine collier brigs Robin Hood and Neptune was brought to a close yesterday afternoon, tho Zlobin Hood winning by about five honrs. It will be remembered that in the race Newcastle tho Neptune won by six hours. Ihe two vessels are therefore placed on an even footing once more, the sailing powers of both vessels being about equal. On the race from here to Newcastle, which was accomplished in ten days, both vessels were in company for six days ; and although beaten by six hours, the Robin Hood was only about six miles behind, the tug which was employed in bringing her up to Newcastle being a slow coach. On the race hence the keptime had the start by about three hours. Neither of the vessels sighted each other till making Cape 1 arewell. Coming through the Strait Captain Yule, of the Neptune, states that he was leading the Robin Hood, but yesterday morning lie was surprised to find she had got ahead of him during the night time. No doubt the Robin Hood had the advantage of him, as with a light wind wo understand she can beat tho ine Neptune was not without her advantage m the race, for we understand that on her previous trip to the present, while in Newcastle, she was re-coppered. The following is the report of the Eo |»" "°°£- Lett Newcastle at 2 p.m, on the 12th. Saw the Nep tune for the first time during thv trip off Cape I arewell on Tuesday ; was in company also with.the iaiwin Bassett same day. Had fine weather across. In the Strait had light wind, chiefly from J 1 *® rounding Terawiti at 2 o clock yesterday morning, when the wind died away to a calm. AVas off t e Heads at 6 o'clock. At 8 o clock the wind VP light from the N.AV.. against winch she beat up the harbor, anchoring off tho wharf at S ° cl ° c * 0 Neotuno left Newcastle on the 12tb inst. at 11 a.m., antf for the first three days had light variable weather and calms; then it settled into the westward and freshened up to a stiff gale. Sighted Cape t arewell on Monday night, was off Terawiti at S p.m. on Thursday and anchored off the wharf at 7 o'clock last night Had variable winds and calms in the Strait. They bring cargoes of 607 tons coal each for their owner, Capt Williams. Tho Neptune hauled into No. 1 berth at the wharf shortly after arrival. . Wo understand that for the future the ste.amer Stormbird will leave Wellington on Saturdays and Wednesdays, and leave AVanganui on Mondays and Thursdays. This arrangement will, considering that the Manawatu will keep to her present arrangement as regards the days of leaving and arriving here, enable the two boats to make four trips between them instead of two as previously. . , . The s.s. Hawea, Captain Wheeler, arrived at the wharf yesterday at 2.15 p.m. She left Port Chalmers at 2 p.m. on the 23rd, and arrived at Akaroa at 7 o’clock the following morning ; left at 8.45 a.m., and arrived at Lyttelton at 1 p.m.; left at 8.40 p.m., arriving at above. Light head winds and fine weather were experienced thoughout. She sails A ortli at 9 o’clock this morning. The ship Dunbritton having some heavy locomotives to discharge hauled from No. G berth at the wharf into No. 4, there being more room at the latter. ARRIV \L OF THE MIDLOTHIAN FROM LONDON. Messrs Shaw, Savili, and Co.’s fine chartered ship Midlothian was signalled early yesterday morning, but as the wind was very light from the N. W.. she did not reach tho harbor till 8 o’clock last night, in charge of Pilot Holmes, who brought her up in the powder ground. Tho Midlothian is a magnificent iron ship of 1084 tons register, commanded by Captain John Griffiths, who, judging by the unanimous opinions of the passengers, appears to have established himself a great favorite amongst them. This is the second voyage of the ship, her first venture being to Sydney, from whence she returned Home, where she found charterers who placed her on the berth for New Zealand. She lias we understand the highest class at Lloyds, and judging from the appearance of the vessel, nothing has been spared that skill and experience could dictate to make her perfect. Her first-class accommodation is admirable, the cabins being large, handsomely fitted, and well ventilated, in adition to which there is every possible convenience and comfort. The saloon is most roomy and elegant, the materials comprising the decorations being teak and maple, relieved with gold. She is a goodly looking craft throughout, and will repay a visit of inspection by those interested in maritime matters. She was built on the Clyde some 15 months ago, and is owned by Mr. J. Boyd, of Glasgow. Messrs. Shaw, Savilie, and Co. are her charterers, Messrs. AV. and G. Turnbull and Co. being her local agents. Has been well patronised as regards freight and passengers. She made a start for New Zealand on the 7th May, but on being towed down the river it was found that the steering gear was out of order. She had therefore to be taken back to Blackwali dock, where a portion of the cargo—some six or eight hundred tons—was taken out. Made another start on the 19th May, but on proceeding down the river in tow of a steamer another accident occurred, this time to one of the crew. It appears that a sailor went on to the forecastle, and through some strange freak took it into his head to slack away the tow-line, the effect of which was that the rope gave a sudden jerk, causing it to snap. The rope flew back with considerable force on to tho vessel, striking the sailor and very severely injuring him. He had to bo landed at Gravesend, and when the vessel left he was not expected to live. Down the Channel the vessel encountered head winds, but after quitting it, which she did on the 24th May, she soon picked up the north-east trades. They proved good and lasting. Crossed the equator on the IGth June, thence had very unfortunate winds, the vessel being driven some considerable way out of her course. Passed the meridian of the Cape on the 18th July, thence had the westerlies good and strong, making a fair run from the Gape to New Zealand of 34 days. Sighted Tasmania on the 14th inst.. and made New Zealand on the 18th inst. Had light winds through the Strait and till arrival.
