A debate which though only apparently local in its bearing, was yet of great general importance, took place in the House last night. We allude to that on the socond reading of the Wanganui Endowed School Bill. The late hour at which the debate terminated prevents us expressing our opinion this morning at the length that could bo wished, but it maybe said that the result of the debate, as shown by the division lists, is to bo entirely regretted. The speech made by the Premier, even outside of thoso made by Mr. Brycb and other gentlemen supporting the Bill, should have been convincing, and it is a subject for sorrow that it was not sufficient to prevail against the influences which wore brought to bear in opposition to the Bill. •
