Friend, —Salutations to you. I have seen a statement about myself in the Wananga of the 12 of August, where it says that Hirini Taiwhanga was sent here to teach me. That statement is not true. Hirini also states that Ngapuhi says I am to follow the lead of Sir George Grey. Now, I was not sent here by Ngapuhi to support Sir George Grey’s party, but on the side of Sir Julius Vogel and his colleagues. As for Hirini he was probably sent here on his own business, whatever that may be.—Enough, from your friend, Hori Karaka Tawiti. Wellington, August 23.
