(per press agency.) Auckland, Monday. The gas company have declared a dividend of fifteen per cent. A death from scarlet fever at the Quarantine station has caused a further detention of the Bebington immigrants. At a political meeting of the Franklin electors at Pokerioe, they passed a resolution asking the members to oppose the Counties Bill and support Grey, New Plymouth, Monday. There is considerable excitement here on account of a memorial having been sent by theSabbath Observance Committee to the Minister for Public Works, in which it was stated that the community as a whole were opposed to trains running on Sundays. A large number of leading gentlemen have taken the matter up, and a counter memorial is now being very numerously signed. Letters are appearing in the papers accusing the ministers composing the Sabbath Observance Committee of falsehood. Ghetmouth; Monday. The return of smelted gold from the Wealth of Nations Company for July is 365 ounces. A dividend of 3s. per share has been declared. The Argus says- an inquiry should be made into the cause of collapse of the Brunner railway bridge, so that the blame may rest on the right shoulders, viz., whether the ’ fact of the bridge breaking down under its own weight was due to faulty material or faultiness of design. Half the cables were recovered uninjured yesterday; the balance will probably be recovered to-day. Eeepton, Monday. The Hopeful Company from 1120 tons of quartz obtained 2313 ounces of gold. Christchurch, Monday. The football club have decided to send a team to play the Northern provinces during the month of August. Dunedin, Monday. The Eev. E. L. Stanford, of this city, has been requested to allow himself to be nominated for the Bishopric of Waiapu. The following resolution has been proposed and carried by a political league at the Duustan :—That in the opinion of this league-the only way the Middle Island can prosper in accordance with its vast resources is by financial separation from the North Island. Blair, arrested at Wellington, charged with absconding from his creditors, was brought up at the Supreme Court this morning. • The Normal School is closed to further pupils owing to its crowded state. Mr. Birch, J.P., has served the proprietors of the Good Templar with a writ for libel, damages being laid at £SOO. An electioneering canvasser has been threatened with a libel action for £IOOO by a Mayoral candidate, for defamation.
