THE CRICKET GROUND.

TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sib, I trust you will not think this an inopportune time of the year to bring before the notice of the Wellington cricketers a few unpleasant facts relative to the disgraceful state of the Basin Reserve and the utilisation of the same during the coming cricket season. It would perhaps be better for me to put my complaints in the way of questions. Now, as any sensible-minded man knows, the ground is simply a disgrace to the Empire City. X should like to be informed whether anything has betn done with regard to the resolutions passed at the meetings held some two or three months back in the Odd Fellows’ Hall and at Te Aro ? What steps, if any, are to be taken for improving the ground for matches next season ? Why has not a public meeting been called (as contemplated a few days ago) to decide whether the terms proposed by the All England Eleven should be accepted ? In making a suggestion, I beg to state the various club should at once meet and appoint a strong and influential committee, and then institute a vigorous canvas for subscriptions, taking good care the funds are laid out to the permanent advantage. I consider this, in my own mind, the only course that can possibly be adopted, as we had last year a full and open statement from the trustees of the financial position of their trust; therefore, any further aid from that quarter can no longer be entertained. So let us put our shoulders to the wheel, and try the generosity of the public.— I am, &c., - ' ' E.E.E.
