WAIHENGA RACES.
(PROJI OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) These races were held on Monday, December 27, on a new racecourse in the Waihenga township, on the east side of the Euamahunga River. Considerable local interest is attached to these races, and the horses are all locally owned. One condition was "no winner to run for a second race." The stakes were considerable for a small meeting, ranging up to .£2o—Waihenga Stakes. Several of the horses that ran at this meeting are entered for the Wairarapa meeting this week. 1. The Hurdle Eace was taken by Mr. Eenall's Steeltrap,. with some difficulty. A Hack Hurdle Eace, which immediately followed, was cleverly " worked " by an old jumper belonging to J. Desmond. 2. Mr. A. Gillies' Script won the Maiden Plate. 3. Little Wonder, Kelpie, Diver, and another were entered for the Waihenga Stakes. The betting was 2tol on Little Wonder against the field.. A good start was effected, but Kelpie was thrown out of the race by falling over a cow. Little Wonder and Diver kept neck-and-neck, but coming up the straight W. Armstrong pushed Diver to the front, and won by three or four lengths. All these three horses are in various races for the Wairarapa meeting. 4. Mr. McMaster's Eaupo, who won the Hutt Hack Race, ran away from his field, and carried off the Gate Purse. 5. To Little Wonder was left the Consolation, Kelpie being second, a length or two in the rear, coming up well. Another horse of J. Desmond's won the Hack Race easily. Everything was quiet and orderly, and the meeting was considered a very successful one. Diver belongs to Mi". T. Ray, and seems a good horse, but is difficult to ride.
