ELECTION FOR THE MAYORALTY.

TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —There seems to be an attempt to depreciate the result of the late Mayoralty election by those who are dissatisfied with the result. We are told that the numbers polled at the late election were less than the numbers polled at the previous one, when Mr. Moorhonse was elected: and we are asked to conclude therefrom that less interest was taken by the ratepayers in the last election than in Moorhouse’s. If this is the only evidence of a less degree of interest having been manifested in last election, the deduction can be shown to be unwarranted- At the Te Aro booth, I have reason to know, there were something like 150 persons who were not allowed to vote because they were not upon the roll. In consequence of not haring paid their rates in time: and. although by no means so large, yet there was a considerable number similarly situated in each of the other wants. All of them. I believe, strongly protested against their disfranchisement, and some even produced receipts which showed that they were wrongly excluded from the roll. Not would the voting of the excluded ratepayers have altered the result of the election, for ahnost all the ratepayers who were prevented from recording their votes were of the working classes: and these, it is tolerably weU known, voted for Hutchison to a man.—l am, &c., j CoGKirio.
