Captain Williams (late of the Merope), arrived in harbor yesterday frem London, after a good run ot 89 days from Gravesend, bnrgmg two saloon passengers and 225 immigrants. ■ been kindly favored with the following report: She left the East Indian dock* on the Ist September, and Gravesend on the 4th: from thence to thelsle m Wight had light easterly winds. Was off Plymouth on the 7th, where she discharged the pilot. Had toe weather to Madeira, which she passalon the loth. Experienced very poor N.E trades and light variable winds to the Equator, which was crossed m longitude 23 W. On the 26th met with a heavy gale from N.NiW." veering westerly to S.S.XV., with heavy beamsea and breaking on board, sbe lost her starboard iue boat on the 27th, being then ini latitude 40'« S., ■ and longitude 5-61 W. Passed to the eastward of the Island of Trinadad on the 17th October, with moderate winds throughout, and to the island of Tristan d'Acunha. which she reached on the 26th, light variable winds, On the following_ day (27th) experienced a very heavy gale from the N.W., with a high sea, shipping large quantities of water. Had S.W. winds to the Cape. Passed close to the CroixeUea _on the7th November, and the Kerghnans on thelOth. On the 11th met with another, gale from S.W,, ship rolling, heavily. Had moderate, winds in running down her eastings till the 18th November Passed, the meridian of Tasmania on the 26th. and sighted Cape Farewell spit onTimrsday night at 9 p.m, and from thence to arriving at the Heads at 10 a.m. yesterday strong N.W. wuids She comes into port with a clean bill of health, having had but two deaths (bothinfants)and no births during the voyage. On the 21st October was boarded by the ship Cape Wealth, from Glasgow, bound to Ceylon (and'was in company for three weeks with her),- and required the assistance 1 of the doctor, the second mate being very ill; on the 22nd passed a brigrigged steamer standing to the northward; on the 3rd October sighted an iceberg in lat. 46 48 and long. **We conscientiously say that the is the cleanest immigrant ship that has ever arrived in this port and thatis not saying anymore than the truth. We went all through the ship, and the manner m which things'are kept in order is really astonishing. The beds are neatly rolled up. mess kids and ntensils in their places (which practice we learn has been carried out allthrough the voyage), and is a credit to all concerned. There is one thing more in particular we must mention, that of the utility of the fire-bell, and exercising the- passengers and crew in case of fire. This was practised on the voyage out, At the sound of the fire-bell the passengers and crew'" immediately repaired to the various places assigned to them. The single women mustered at their berths nnder the charge of the matron and submatron ; whilst the married women and children: did the ’same, each woman getting a blanket ready for wetting in case they should be required for subduing the fire. Parties of the crew were put in charge of the boats and pumps, under whose superintendence the able-bodied male passengers assisted. The pumps on one occasion were tried, when it was found that two powerful jets of water were over the decks in less than two minutes from the time the first alarm sounded.' A boat was also lowered in three minutes, properly manned, and in charge of a competent officer. Dr.'Bligh is the surgeon-superintendent, and was here lastiyear as 1 such in the Euterpe. .Mr. Bowling, who was with Captain Bishop last voyage, is chief officer, and his brother, who followed Captain Williams from the Merope, is second officer. The passengers all speak highly of the comfort they have had during the voyage, captain and all making the time pa-gg as pleasantly as possible. There is one thing we have almost forgotten to mention, that of a singing on board three times a week, which helped to pass many a weary hour away. ’ The s.s. Rangatira; Captain Griffiths, arrived from Napier at 6.50 p.m. yesterday.. She left Napier at 7 p m. on Thursday, 2nd inst.; passed Cape Kidnapper at 8.30 p.m. same day, and Cape Turnagain at 2.45 a m yesterday; was off Castle Point at 6 a.m.; rounded Cape Palliser at 2 p.m., entered the heads at 5.40 p.m., and arrived alongside .the Queen’s Wharf as above. She experienced from Napier to Blackhead a [light S.E. breeze, and from thence to Wellington strong W. and N.W. winds. The p.s Luna, Captain Fairchild, proceeded yesterday at 2 p.m. to the Heads to tow the ship Avalanche into port, but found that the ship was working up the harbor in gallant style, and did not require the assistance of a Government tug, consequently the Luna retimed to the wharf, arriving at 4.40 p.m. ' < The s.s. Egmonfc left the wharf at 5.15 on Thursday evening for Wanganui," and proceeded as far as Toms Rock, off Terawifci, but finding the wind too strong. Captain Irvine returned to port, arriving at. 10 p.m. the same night. She leaves this evening'at The Union Company's steamer Hawea, Captain F. Wheeler, arriving at 8,30 a.m. yesterday from Northern ports, and left at 3.20 for South with a large number of passengers.
