IMPORTATION OF TEACHERS.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —I perceive by the report of the proceedings of the Wellington Education Board, as published in your issue of Tuesday last, that the Under-Secretary for Immigration has been requested to communicate with the Agent-General in London, with a view of obtaining a supply of teachers for this province. Now sir, I hope you will allow me to place thesefew points before tho Under-Secretary for Immigration in order that he may know what Inducements he could offer trained and qualified teachers in England before leaving their homes and friends. Two qualified, trained, and classed teachers have applied at the Education Office within the last month, and have been told that there is at present no vacancy. One of these gentleman is from Birmingham, and came up here from Christchurch after his arrival there, and had to go back again. A second point I would wish teachers to know before leaving their homes in England is, that they would have to wait ten weeks before getting any salary, and then get only a month's, in the meantime having to provide their schools with a supply of school requisites. A third point, and not the least essential to know is. that the Inspector has the virtual appointment, classification, and dismissal of the teachers, and that there is no appeal. I hope the Under-Secretary for Immigration will understand from the Board that any new teachers he induces to come out will get employment on arrival, will be paid monthly, and be the direct servants of the Board, and not hold their position as those under the Board now hold theirs.—l am, &c., Fair Play. P.S.—l hope the Board will give those teachers a hearing whom the Inspector asked to bo summarily dismissed last Board day.
