THE ITALIAN IMMIGRANTS.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —I count on your kindness to correct on error that appears to spread in Wellington—deerring the Italians who have come to your islands. It is not true that we are weak and incapable of labor, and this will be attested by the good people of Wellington, who, with discernment, gave us that employment we were accustomed to in Italy. I mean, that those amongst us who had been employed when at home in some artistic labor by those considerate gentry were given employment, or hopes, which cheered us on. Doubtless some from amongst us can cultivate the soil, &c, Mr. John Glin, the immigration agent, acted somewhat unwisely by applying at Leghorn (Livorno) for laboring men ; such should have been sought for in the interior of the country, and the search would have proved successful. But certain documents were placed in our hands, assuring us of our return to Italy in the event of lack of employment, which would be realised in the case of an artist being compelled to fall on a calling entirely alien to his habits. Our inability to speak English has also hindered our success, although with time this difficulty, too, would disappear, whilst we should have added another masculine tongue to our sweet Italian. —I am, &c., A Son of Italy.
