SCHOLASTIC.

Sir,—rhe appointment of Mr. Newlvn -o the head mastership'of the Buckle-street school was by no means the least important action of the new Education Board; and will. I hope, be productive of good results. Perhaps, next to knowledge strength of will and power of enforcing discipline are the raos 1 - important requisites in a master of a large primary school. The gentleman chosen by the Board to take charge of the only really public school as yet erected by the Board in the city, is known to be particularly well qualified for the duties lately allotted to him. indeed a reference to the Board's last report (presented to the Provincial Council), shows that the " discipline, attention to cleanliness, and the home lesson work o£ this (Mr. Newlyn's) school are the best in the province," while the a\*erage proficiency of the pupils was above that of the other schools in the city, the highest classes being " too young to be expected to pass in the higher standards without longer training." I hardly think that the Board could have made a better choice, and I think that parents resident in. Te Aro will soon be as desirous of retaining Mr. Newlyn's services as the Thorndon people "undoubtedly are.—l am, &c, A Parent.
