The Customs revenue collected at tho port of 1 Wellington yesterday was as follows:
The amount of Customs duties received at this port for the week ending September 10, 1875,- was as under :
The import trade continues good, although we note ho improvement in prices, which are still in favor of buyers. This will, doubtless, in time correct itself as the season advances, and stocks diminish, but just now, owing to the large cargoes that are in course of b' ing landed, every store is filled, and the anxiety of importers to realise tends to keep down quotations at their lowest. At auction sales, are limited, and biddings generally below importers' views. At Mr. Veuuell's sale of saddlery, &c, at the stores of Mr. E. Pearce, on the 15th, most of the lots were withdrawn. Patna vice fetched £23 per ton; Perrier'scham-p-igne, 50s. per doz., d.p.; 30 hf.-chests tea, exMedora, Is. Sd. per lb.; 50 boxes do, at 225.; 2 hf.-tierces Barrett's twist tobacco, Is. 4d. per lb.; 20 casks soda crystals, £9 10s. per ton; 50 sacks oats, 3s. 6d. per bushel, &C., &c. In the produce market business has been quiet Keg butter meets with little inquiry for shipment, and a large quantity of stock held back for higher rates is now obliged to be sold at Sd. and 9d. per lb. A good sound sample is however worth lid. to 12d. per lb. Cheese is a shade easier, and sales have been made at 10|d. per lb. Flour unaltered at £ll to £ll 15s. per ton for Canterbury and Oamaru mills. In grain we report the sale of 200 sacks New Zealand maize at ss. 9d. Oats move off quietly at 3s. sd. to 3s. 6d. per bushel. Stocks ample. Fowls' food inquired for, and scarce at 4s. 6d. per bushel. Hams and bacon, market supplied at 10J to is. 2d. per lb.
MELBOURNE. (From the Argus ot Sth September.) _ In the import markets business is still quiet, and the sales effected do not excite much interest or call for any special comment as a rule. Breailsturfs maintain a steady appearance ; best brands of flour are saleable at £ll ss. privately; at auction likewise a small lot was sold at this figure. Of brands in less favor, however, we hear of sales being made, at £ll to £ll 2s. 6d. The new railway tariff, by which a reduction is made of about 25 per cent, on the carriage of all produce, is coming into operation soon, and it may be that these brands are now to be had a little less on that account. Wheat is also offering a little more freely ; we quote ss. Bd. to ss. 9d. for best northern, and we hear of sales today at the first-named figure, but there is not much to be met with as yet. Oats are a trifle firmer; under the hammer, some 2000 bushels were disposed of at 3s. 6Jd. to 3s. 9jd., and privately a parcel of 1200 bushels New Zealand milling was placed at 4s. 2d. New Zealand advices quote oats at 35., and malting barley at 55., but there is nothing of interest to refer to. Maize is quoted at 4s. lOd. to 4s. lid. The feature of the day was the sugar sale this forenoon, and on yellow counters and such qualities an advance was realised. 1 The cargo of the Star of Hope, comprising 5399 bags Mauritius, was submitted to competition, the whole of which was disposed of, when yellow brewing to finest yellow crystals sold at £32 10s. to £33 : finest soft counters, £32 10s.; fine yellow counters, £3l 15s to £32 55.: good yellows, £3O 10s. to £3l 5s ; low counters, £2B 10s. to £29 : fine browns, £2B to £29 10s.; fine rations, £25 ss. to £26 103.; and good rations, £23 10s. to £24 ss. Wo note a very fair demand privately, and sales are reported at £34 to £35 10s. for grey to good white crystals. Woolpacks have been largely sold. 207 bales of sound, stated to be irregular weight, were quitted at 2s. 6id. to 2s. 7d., but I almost the whole having gone into the bands of one buyer, the harm which otherwise might have been done to the market has to some extent been neutralised; the great depression prevailing, however, may be inferred from the sale in question. Kerosene oil is coming into notice, and even slightly better prices are being obtained. Some 4000 cases mixed brands- Devoe's. diamond, and others—have changed hands at an advance on late auction rates. Further business, moreover, is said to be pending, 150 tons Rangoon dressed rice were cleared off by auction at £IS to £l9. Lumber was disposed of publicly at better rates. Clear pine sold at £l6 10s. to £l6 55.; carpenters' clear brought £l3 to £S 2s. Od.; shelving, £l2 7s. 6d. to £lO 2s. 6d.; T. and G. ceiling, £9 15s. to £9 10s. Sawn laths were sold at 235. to 225. 6d. There is business doing in liquids. We hear of a shipment of Lemon Hart 10 per cent. o.p. rum having been taken up to arrive, at a full price. An inquiry has sprung up for bottled stout, which is likely to lead to considerable sales.
