Tho ship Toviotclale, Captain Nichol, ninety-six days out from London, arrived in harbor on 1 hursday, August 28. Tho captain reports tliat tho ship left the London docks on May 15. Tho ship experienced line weather up to Juno 20, and from that date to the end of the voyage had to contend with heavy gales, lho voyiwo wis uneventful; but an unfortunate casualty happened on July 20, tho ship at the time being in lat 42deg. SOinin. S., lon. 02deg. 12inin K A squall came onT and some tremendous seas broke over the ship fore and aft. One of the cowhouses broke loose, and a seaman named Charles Kawson received such injuries that ho soon after died. Tho health of tho crew was exceedingly good. Information lias been received from tho Sub-Col-lector of Customs at the Chatham Islands that on the "Otli May last the following articles were picked up on Kaingaroa Beach, viz.:-A piece of pine plank about eight feet in length and eight or nine inches wide with two obloi.g holes cut m it by way of a sort of rough ornamentation ; and a camp stool, roughly made with a strong new canvas seat, with tho letters J McM. painted on the under side These articles appeared to have been in the water but a slior; time. Perhaps tho letters on tho camp stool might load to its identification. We have been favored with the following extract of a letter from a passenger per tho barquo Australiiid hence to Newcastle, N.S.W., dated the 10 hinst. :- "We havo arrived safely at Newcastle, after a very rough passage of fifteen days. On Sunday, the Bth inst about 2 p.m., when noar tho port of our destination" we had tho misfortune to carry away our rudder, and the carpenter and crew had to work all tho rest • of tho day and night to fix a temporary one. The woathor was very sevoro during the run across. On ono occasion the vessel shipped a hoavy sea, which washed tho man from tho wheel. On the morning of our arrival at Newcastle a sad occurrenco took place, which cast a gloom over all in the sliip. The second mato was aloft furling sails, when he was suddenly taken ill, and the sailors had to lower him down by a rope to the deck. On reaching tho deck, ho said, " Good-byo, captain," and immediately expired. He was such a nice fellow, and was liked by all on board. We cannot loavo tho ship, until tho Health Officer comes on board, and reports upon tho death of tho poor mato. Tho captain and all were very kind to us."
