Northern Forts. —Hawea, s.s., this day. Auckland and Levuka. Star of the South, s.s, this day. Yesterday morning the glass was very high generally, and moderate winds were reported from most places. The day here was very fine, and towards sunset a breeze came in from the eastward. The barometer fell slightly during the afternoon. The s.s. Hawea reached the wharf yesterday morning at 8.15. She left Port Chalmers at 4.30 p.m. on the 4th, and arrived at Lyttelton the following morning at 8.45. Left again at 4.45, and arrived gt the wharf as above. This passage of the Hawea was a remarkably quick one, she doing the whole distance between Port Chalmers and this place, including stoppages, in 40 hours. The s.s. Taranaki arrived yesterday from Northern ports at 8.25 a.m. She left Onehunga on the 3rd, arrived off New Plymouth next morning, reached Nelson on the morning of the Sth, left at 11.15 a.m. on Thursday, and arrived as above. Experienced fine weather throughout. The s.s. Stormhird, Captain Doile, left Wellington on the 28th July, at 4 p.m. ; had light easterly winds to'Castle Point: from thence to Cape Tumagain, strong N.E. winds with head sea ; thence to Blackhead; heavy N.N.E. gale. Passed Blackhead at 3 p m on the 29tb, and saw the schooner Enterprise lying near the reef at anchor. After passing Blackhead the gale increased, with heavy squalls and tremendous sea. Hove-to at 7 P-m., till 8 a.m. on the 30th; at 9 a.m. ran back under Blackhead, but found the sea too rough to anchor. Hove-to under the reef till 2 p.m., when the wind veered round to the N. W. and moderated; then started for Napier, arriving at 1 a.m. on the 31st, hut did not get to the wharf till 3 p.m., the Rangatira having the preference, owing to carrying the mails. She left Napier on Tuesday morning at 5 a.m.; steamed to the Kidnappers, and anchored from 8 a.m, on the 2nd till Thursday at 3 p.m., arriving here last evening, having experienced southerly winds throughout. The schooner Enterprise was passed under the Kidnappers. The Stormbird’s passengers were—Mrs. Shields, Messrs. Axup, Frank, Smith, and Napper. The s.s. Easby is expected to arrive to-day, as sbe left Sydney, after putting back through stress of weather, on the 31st ult.
The a’.a. Kiwi took her departure last night at 12 o’clock for Flaxboume. This is her first trip since 3 tiff ta r of the South left Lyttelton at 3 p.m. yesterday. She will probably sail late this evening. The s.s. Taranaki sailed yesterday afternoon for Southern porta. The s.s. Hawea leaves to-day for the North. BY TELEGRAPH. PORT CHALMERS, Friday. The Ladybird delivered the outward Southern mails at 2 o’clock. The barque Prospector arrived from Dunedin after a rapid passage of four days.
