(PER PRESS AGENCY.) Grahajistown, Thursday. It is stated that a flux has been discovered by a gentleman on the Thames for treating Taranaki ironsand. The experiments tried on a small scale were most successful, A patent has been applied for. The inventor will shortly have a public test. Napier, Thursday. At the Hawkes Bay Agricultural Society’s quarterly meeting there was a small attendance. The meeting was adjourned till August 10, when the programme for the next show mil be drawn up. Dunedin, Thursday. Mr. Sibbald rebuilds the Princess Theatre immediately, and offers £lO for the best design. He intends to erect a theatre superior in every respect to any in the Australian colonies. The O’Connell Centenary Dinner is now on. Room crowded. Great enthusiasm. Mr. Macassey proposes “The memory of O’Connell.” Christchurch, Thursday. At a preliminary meeting in Christchurch last night, the following resolution was adopted for proposal at the public meeting re abolition to-night :—“ That this meeting cordially approves of the proposals contained in the Government Bills for the abolition of the provinces and for the constitution of districts throughout the colony to have the control of local revenues, and believes that if carried into effect they will be conducive to great and lasting benefit to the country.” Opinions were also expressed that the Abolition Bill should be carried through this session. A prospectus, with a very influential directory, is issued, for a Loan and Investment Company of New Zealand (Limited), with a capital of £600,000, in £2O shares. During a quarrel at the Caversham Hotel last night, Robert Beavers, seaman, stabbed James Butzer, chief mate of the ship Star of India, in the arm. Hokitika, Thursday. At the coroner’s inquest to-day on the body of Pizey, the jury brought in a verdict of suicide with his own revolver while in a state of temporary insanity. The agency of the Bank of Now Zealand at Ross was attempted to be robbed last night. The bank was broken into, but the burglars were not successful in getting any cash. A man named Harry Jones has been arrested on suspicion and remanded until to-morrow. A public meeting has been convened by the Mayor, at the request of the citizens, re abolition, for Monday evening next. Greymoutii, Thursday.
The body of Mr. E. B. Fox, drowned iu the New River on Saturday last, was found to-day on the beach, twelve miles north of Greymouth. The body will bo interred with Masonic honors.
