A meeting of the Past Grands of the Society of Odd Fellows, M.U., was held at their Hall last evening, for the purpose of giving the Purple Lecture, and advancing the various past officers in their degrees. The chair was occupied by Provincial Grand Master Marshall, supported by the other district officers. After the conclusion of the Purple Lecture, a very handsomely framed Past Grand’s certificate was presented to P.G. George Leggett, for his exertions in getting up a subscription for the widow and orphans of the late Brother Grimstone. In making the presentation to Brother Leggett, the speaker alluded in highly eulogistic terms to his meretorious Service in the cause of humanity, and hoped that the recognition that had been taken of it would be an inducement for others to follow his good example. B.G. Leggett thanked the brothers for their kindness, and said that should another opportunity unfortunately occur, he would act in a similar manner.

Buckstone’s popular drama entitled “ The Green Bushes ” was the piece selected by the spirited management at the Theatre Royal last night. The piece was rendered with the careful finish which always characterise the presentations of the Star Company. The drolleries of the Irish characters were thoroughly appreciated by the audience, who signified their approval by frequent and hearty plaudits. There was a very good house. To-night will be presented “The Colleen Bawn,” for the benefit of Mrs. Walter Hill.

At the Resident Magistrate’s Court yesterday, after some drunkards had been disposed of, the case of Eliza Smith, chief witness in the case of rape for which a man named Cameron was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment, was proceeded with. The evidence of Mrs. Cameron and of Cameron, directly contrary to that given by Smith at the recent trial, was heard, after which the girl was committed for trial.

An inquest was held yesterday afternoon at the Morgue before the coroner, Dr. Johnston, on the body of Mrs. Maria Cockle. Dr. Diver stated in evidence that he was sent for the previous evening by Mr. Cockle, and that on his arrival at the house, he found Mr s. Cockle to be quite dead. He was not acquainted with the deceased. He had made a poet mortem examination, which led him to believe that the deceased died from serous appoplexy, accelerated by excessive drinking. The husband made a statement to the effect that he went to his work in the morning, leaving his wife in bed, and that on his return home at night, he found her dead. She had complained of illness during the past fortnight, but would not permit him to send for a doctor. The jury returned a verdict that the deceased died from natural causes.
