RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

Thursday, Joly 22. (Before Major Paul, J. H. Wallace, and J. Dransfield, J.P.'s.) DRUNKENNESS. James Carter was charged with drunkenness, disorderly conduct, and resisting the police, by Sergeant Ready. Pined 205., with the alternative of forty-eight hours in gaol, with hard labor. DRUNK AND INCAPABLE. James Hamble, on the information of Ernest Carroll, was charged as above. The offence being proved, the defendant was fined 55., or in default twenty-four hours in gaol. OBTAINING MONEY BY FALSE PRETENCES. J. Roberts was charged by the police with obtaining money by means of valueless cheques. The prisoner was remanded for one month to enable the police to obtain evidence. CARELESS USE OF FIRE. Richard Kerelake was charged by the police as above. The defendant's wife appeared in court and informed the Bench that her husband had only recently moved into the house, and that it had been represented to them that the chimneys had been swept, though, as a matter of fact, such was not the case. The defendant was discharged with a caution. CIVIL CASES. There were four cases in which the amount claimed was paid into court, and two in which a settlement was arrived at out of court. Three cases, in which the town clerk sued for moneys due to the municipality, were held over in consequence of non-service of summonses. Several civil cases are set down for hearing on Tuesday, the 27th instant.
