Captain Evans "ports leaving Wanganui at 5 p.m. on the Ist; had strong S.E. and S.AV. winds during the passage. _ .. The regular Fijian trader, s.s. Star of the South, arrived from Auckland, via Napier, yesterday at 2 D.m„ after a boisterous passage of forty-eight hours. She brought no cargo for Wellington, and only a small consignment for Lyttelton and Dunedm. After landing her passengers she steamed over to the Patent Slip, where her hull will be overhauled. She will sail for Lyttelton and Dunedin at 2 p.m. to-day. The p.s. Lyttelton took her departure yesterday for Wairau. with a general cargo and one passenger. The steamer Ino left yesterday afternoon for Pelorus Sound, where she will load timber for Nelson. The barque Malay cleared out yesterday, m ballast, for Newcastle. t c . Yesterday steam was got up on board the Stormbird for the purpose of testing her boiler, preparatory to her official trial trip, which in all probability will take place oh Saturday next. The result of the test was highly satisfactory, a pressure of 181bs. being obtained in less than an hour. A slight mishap to her safety-valve, through an oversight, delayed the test for about three-quarters of an hour, and at the time created somewhat of a sensation amongst those present. Her engines, which have been in the boat since she was launched, worked in a very even and. smooth manner after the thorough overhaul which they have received at the hands of Mr. Mills, who also made her boiler. Mr. Kelly, her engineer, is highly pleased with the manner in which the work has been done by Mr. Mills, and it must be pleasing to that gentleman to know that he has given satisfaction. We shall, however, be better able to give our readers a more detailed account of the improvements effected generally, after her trial trip has taken place.
