CANTERBURY. . The Times of Saturday reports The gram market during the past week has been characterised by a great dulness, buyers not caring to operate at any Idvance on former prices. AVheat is ready of purchlse but oats, of which there is still a large quantity in the country, are not freely parted with at present rates. There is plenty of barley offering, and we hear that one or two small lots have changed hands at 4s. 6d. Some coastwise and Australian shipments have gone forward during the week. There is no change in the value of dairy produce or of potatoes but owing to the bad weather, and .the consequent state of the road, deliveries of the latter have been but small. The following are buyers’ quotations Wheat, 6s da ; oats, 2s. 6d.; barley, 4s. 6d. to 4s. 9d.; potatoes, 425. Cd. to 475. Cd.; cheese, BJd. to Bsd.; flour, in sacks, £lO, in 100’s £lO 7s. 6d., in 60’s £lO 155.; bran, £4 10s.; sharps, £5 10s., 10s. extra f.o.b. Hams and bacon, bare 10*d. per lb., in cloth lid.; bacon (only) bare, 9sd. per lb., in cloth 10d.; hams (only) bare, 12d., in cloth 12£d. MELBOURNE. The Aiustmlasian of May 22 reports Since the publication of the agricultural statistics the market for breadstuffs has been rather unsettled, but is now firmer. Sales of flour were made to-day at £lO 15s. to £lO 17s. 6d. Nothing under £ll would be taken now. AVheat is scarce, and there is very little offering privately. Under the hammer to-day, fully' 800 bags were cleared at prices ranging from ss. lid. to ss. 2d.; ss. 2Jd. was also realised. There is a fair business doing in oats. About 1800 bags were cleared off yesterday at auction, when 4s. Id. to 4s. 3id. was obtained for 1500 bags New Zealand stout oats, and 300 bags Tasmanian seed were placed at 4s. 4id. to 4s. ojd. 300 bags feeding were disposed of publicly today at Ss. Cd. to 3s. 9d. Maize is firm at ss. sd. Bran has realised Is. 3d. to Is. 34d. Pollard has been disposed of at Is. 3d. The oatmeal millers have reduced their prices for Victorian-made to £27. The Argxts of May 20 reports:—ln the import > markets business has not shown the slightest sign of activity throughout the day, and complaints of dullness have been very prevalent indeed. Privately, we learn of the quittance of the entire cargo of Tasmanian coast oats, per Don, comprising 800 bags, on terms withheld. Maize is firm at ss. 5d.; but the market being bare of stocky there are no sales •to report. Sugars are quiet, though there is a steady business doing for trade purposes. There will, however, be a break in the monotony by the offer to-morrow, at noon, of the usual quantity of Yarraville refined sorts. Teas continue to meet with a great amount of favor. AVe learn of the disposal, in parcels, of about 900 boxes of congous, at prices rising from Is. 3d. to Is. lOd. A line of 150 half-chests finest congous has also been placed at 2s. 3d. Sales of malt are reported at 12s. lor trade parcels. For large lines we quote 11s. Cd. In liquids, we note further sales of Hennessy’s case brandy, to land, at 325. The Argus of May 14 reports;—At auction, 5649 packages of Yarraville refinery sugars were quitted at 30s. to 355. 3d., prices which show a decline on last offerings of 15s. to 20s. per ton. AVe also report private sales of 400 tons of the Victoria Sugar Company’s make at 28s. Cd. to 30s. I BY TELEGRAPH. NAPIER, Saturday. Mr. R. Miller sold yesterday, at Shamrock, 120 head of cattle—store cows, with calves, at £C to £7 ; heifers, 18 months and 30 months, £4 2s. 6d. to £5 155.; steers, 12 months and 30 months, £4 to £7 155.; fat cows, middling class, £7 10s. to £Blss. These are the highest prices for this class of stores, but It is expected that higher prices will rule. The butchers talk of raising the price of meat Id. per lb.
