CHRISTCHURCH.
The Iwttelton Times, May 21th, reports:— A moderate business has been done in the import market, and with more settled weather during the past few days, some improvement has been noticeable. Stocks are not unduly largo, and the supplies coming forward are far from excessive. The Cicero, from London, arrived on May 19, and several other vessels are now fully due from tho same port. The Dunedin market is very dull, and stocks there arc extremely heavy. During tho past few days five vessels from British ports have arrived there. Goods are offering in this market at prices f.o.b. (In Dunedin) that must leave serious loss to importers, and we expect rather free supplies from our neighbors during the next few months. There has been a fair business done in sugars, and prices keep very firm at late quotations. A small cargo of Queensland sugars is expected, and will bo submitted to auction on arrival. The samples that have reached tho consignees are not in a condition to give a fair idea of thq quality of tho bulk, the finest white crystals excepted, which are very good. Tea is only In demand to meet actual wants of traders, but stocks arc steadily working off. There has been a great scarcity of galvanised Iron for some time past, and as high as £37 10s. paid for first brands, Jmt the wants of tho trade are being freely mot by considerable shipments just to hand and to arrive from Australia ; very little is on tho way from England. Cement, although coming forward by vessels to arrive in largo quantities, finds buyers at 225. for parcels in port, and a trifle less to arrive. Spirits are fairly active, without any change in value, Hcimessy'a brandy, in case, is held for 82s. Cd. Bottled stout Is rather better, and 12s. is obtainable for first brands. Alo is rather dull at 118. 0(1. ; Bass's, In hhds., is nearly out of first hands, bub a supply of tho new brew la daily expected. Hops are still very scarce, and likely to continue so for some time ; prime Kent worth 3s. 3d. Tho export season may now bo considered as about drawn to a close. The Warwick is a full ship, witli tho exception of about one hundred tons of wheat, which has to bo lightered on account of the vessel's draft of water being' too great to onablo her to finish loading alongside tho Gladstone x>lcr, Tho Inverono has taken her -berth to fill up, after taking a considerable part of her cargo in at Auckland and jfapfer
