BY TELEGRAPH. OAMARU, "Wednesday. Arrived : Mera, ten days from Newcastle.

PICTON, Wednesday. Sailed : Elizabeth Guile, schooner, with timber, lor Lyttelton, at 9 a.m.

As prognosticated in our weather report of yesterday, a sudden change of the wind took place at an earlv hour yesterday morning. The wind, which had b«n blowing steadily from the Is.N.W., accompanied by exceedingly heavy showers, lolled shortly after midnight, although the rain came down in torrents. About three o’clock, however, the wind veered round to the southward, increasing to such force that by noon yesterday it blew with hurricane power, the sea being feather-white. Late last night the wind had not abated, although copious showers of rain fell at frequent intervals. Shipping was again almost at a standstill, the only arrivals being the barque Kingdom of Italy and the steamers Ladybird and Maori. The former encountered the full force of the gale after passing the Kaikouras. By telegraph we learn that similar stormy weather is being experienced throughout the colony. We are requested by Pilot Holmes to state that the assertion made by the Ei'eitiup Post, to the effect that he was treated in a discourteous manner by Captain Gregory, of the Hindostan, is devoid of truth; as, on the contrary, he received every attention and civility from Captain Gregory. The long-expected barque Kingdom of Italy has at last put in an appearance, after a lengthy passage of 137 days from London, she having left the docks on the 9th of January; but she has in reality only been 115 days from the English Channel, as she put into Portland for repairs on the 25th of January, and left again on the 30th. The voyage has been marked by fine weather and contrary winds, although a southerly gale was encountered when off the meridian of Tasmania, which smashed a portion of her bulwarks, she ran through Cook Strait with a northerly wind, and was boarded by Pilot Holmes off the Steeple Pock, who brought her up to the lower anchorage in the teeth of a strong southerly gale. During a heavy squall off Evans Bay, she carried away the crane of the lower maintopsail yard. The Kingdom of Italy is a fine wooden barque, and she has brought about 900 tons of general cargo, 90 tons of which is of railway iron. She comes consigned to Messrs. Johnston and Co. ,

The as. Ladybird arrived from the South shortly """ after noon yesterday, bringing a number of passengers • for AVelllngton. She left Port Chalmers at noon on the 23rd, and had light head winds until arriving at ■ Lyttelton at 8.15 a.m. on the 21th. Left next day at 6pm,; met with N.E. winds until arriving off the •Kaikouras at 2 a.m. on the 20th, but was unable to land several passengers in consequence of the rough weather. Left the Kaikouras at 3.30 same morning, and arrived as above ; having encountered a strong S.E. gale, with high sea. The Ladybird will sail for Northern ports at noon to-day. The Dunedin Harbor Company’s s.s. Maori, Captain Malcolm, arrived early yesterday morning from Nelson. The Maori left Dunedin on the 12th, and called at all the intermediate stations on her trip round the Middle Island. She brought a number of passengers and a general cargo for Wellington, In consequence of the heavy gale from the southward she did not leave for Lyttelton yesterday as advertised, but will do so at noon this day. We are indebted to Mr. Donaldson, parser, for report of passage and our exchanges. Left Port Chalmers at 4.30 p.m., on Wednesday, May 12, for Bluff, &c. On Thursday she layto, owing to thick fog, until about 5 p.m.. when the fog cleared up, and she steamed into The Bluff. Left on Friday morning, the 14th, with fair wind and calm sea ; passed the Solanders about 3 p.m., and Green Island at 4.30 p.m.; at 5 p.m. heavy swell came from N.W. ; entered Preservation Inlet at 0.15 p.m., landed stores and passengers, and anchored for the night; glass very low. Left on Saturday at 7.30 a.m., thick weather and raining, with heavy sea ; entered Doubtful Sound at 5 p.m., and steamed through to Deas’ Cove in Thompson’s Sound, where she anchored for the night. On Sunday, the 10th, raining bard in the morning; glass 20dog. ; cleared towards afternoon. On Monday, the 17th, hove up the anchor at 7.30 a.m. and proceeded to sea through Thompson’s Sound; heavy scafrorn S.W. and fair wind; passed Milford at 1 p.m., and Martin Bay at 3 p.m., but could not land, owing to heavy sea; passed Cascade Point at 6 p.m., and anchored for the night in Jackson's Bay at 7 p.m.; landed cargo and passengers on Tuesday, calm sea, and no wind in the morning. Left at 2 p.m.; the weather came on thick and raining. On Wednesday, fine day ; crossed Hokitika bar at 8.30; bar good: Alhambra and Tararua outside; discharged cargo, and on Thursday, the 20th, crossed the bar at 9.45 a.m.; bar rough and swell outside: heavy swell on Oreyraouth bar ; hove-to outside until Friday morning, when she steamed over the bar at 10.30 a.m.; discharged, and took in 45 tons cargo and 509 fire bricks for Wellington, 0000 feet timber for Timaru, and 60 tons coal. Left the Grey at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and arrived off Westport at 5 p.m. and anchored; crossed the bar at 9 p.m., and discharged cargo. On Sunday, tho 23rd, left Westport at 11 a.m.; had a nasty sea until arrival off Nelson at C a.rn.; came alongside the wharf at 8.30 a.m. Left again on Tuesday at noon, and arrived at Wellington wharf at 7 a.m. on the 2Cth.
