MINING IN NELSON.

The rapid progress the quartz-mining district of the Inangahua is making is nnmistakeahly shown by the large yearly increase. in the figures given in the annual reports of the warden, not only as regards the quantity of stone crushed, but also in respect to the aggregate yield of gold and the amount of money paid in dividends. Indeed, the latter item is a special and gratifying feature in Mr. Warden Broad’s report this year, and seeing that the Inangahua district is and has been progressing for the last two or three years almost entirely on its own merits and resources, the fact that the dividends paid have footed up to such a large sum is a most satisfactory indication of the prosperous future before our quartz-mines. The following returns are made up to the 31st March, and are for the year ending on that day;—The Ajax Company is returned as having crushed 643 tons of stone, with a gross yield of 7450z5. of gold. It may be remarked that the erection of machinery for deep sinking, which is being proceeded with, has interfered with the work of raising and crushing quartz in this mine. The Golden Fleece Company have crushed 2632 tons, with a yield of 25170z5., and £3600 were paid away in dividends. At the Anderson mine, 2421 tons were crushed, with a yield of 11420z5.; and the yield from the Wealth of Nations came to 40676z5. of gold from 5585 tons of quartz. Although tliis company was impeded in its operations for two months by a break in the water-race, dividends to the amount of £5361 were paid during the year. The Just-in-Time, at Boatman’s Creek, crushed 491 tons, with a yield of 6910z5.; and the Firey Cross Company, iu the same locality, crushed 1917 tons, with a yield of 26110z5. This company declared dividends to the amount of £2700. The Inglewood Company crushed 605 tons, and obtained 2710z5.; and the Phmnix Company, from 585 tons obtained 4970z5. This company only commenced work in October last year, and dividends amounting to £533 6s. Bd. have been distributed among the shareholders since that time. The Energetic Company crushed 4453 tons of stone, with a yield of 29020z5., and £SOOO have been paid during the year by the company iu liquidation of the debt on machinery. In the claim known as Larry’s No. 2, 2460 tons have been crushed, ■with a yield of 18440z5., and this company has also paid a large sum to lessen the debt on the machinery, the amount set down under this head being £3500. The Caledonian Company crushed 103 tons, and got 4630z5., and paid in dividends £750, while the Eldorado obtained 4860z5. from 811 tons, and the Victoria 104ozs. for the same number of tons. The yield of gold for the thirteen companies mentioned in the report reaches the magnificent total of 18,3400z5., and the total dividends paid come to £12,944 6s. Bd. The total number of tons crushed is 22,310, giving an average of Ifidwt®. lOigrs, per ton.
