The Sunbeam, a barque of 442 tons, which loaded Home from this port some years ago, arrived from London at 8 o’clock last night, dropping anchor to the north of Magazine Point. She finally left England on the 2nd of January, and has therefore made a passage of 110 days. Nothing eventful occurred during the voyage. She was boarded yesterday morning by Pilot Holmes, who succeeded in beating her to an anchorage against a strongN.N.W. breeze. -She has 500 barrels of powder on board, but no passengers. The vessel Is consigned to Messrs. Levin and Co. The steamer Ladybird, Captain Andrew, left Manukau on Tuesday afternoon last, and was fortunate in meeting with fair weather. She loft Picton for Wellington at seven yesterday morning, and arrived after a good run of five hours. A lively N. W. breeze was blowing in Cook Strait. She discharged a small cargo, and sailed South last evening. The barque William Ackers, which had been lying in this port since Good Friday last, sailed yesterday morning for Newcastle. ~ The steamer Alhambra, Captain Bawdcn, left the harbor at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon, for Lyttelton, Port Chalmers, Tho Bluff, and Melbourne. The clipper schooner Zior left for Timaru, with 100 tons of coal, yesterday. Tho schooner Hannah Broomfield left last evening for Wanganui, with railway plant. The steamer Rangatira left Napier for Wellington at 11.15 yesterday morning, and tho Star of the South hence, arrived at 4.30 a.m. The last of tho cargo for the ship Carnatic—consisting of a few bales of wool and several packages of leather—was brought from Nelson by tho Ladybird yesterday. The vessel will haul from tho wharf a full ship early this morning, and it is probable tho steamer Wellington will tow her clear of tho Heads In tho afternoon. Tho steamer Wellington, Captain Carey, arrived from Port Chalmers and Lyttelton shortly after noon yesterday, after a passage from tho latter port of twenty hours. Matilda bears, crushing one of her boats ; carried away spanker boom and afterhouso on deck ; March 2, second officer har pooned a largo whale, but it made a furious attack on the boat and bitit completely in two. fortunately, none of the crew were injured, and they were speedily picked up by another boat. The shipkeeper ran down with the ship to save the stoven boat. One or tne sailors named George Reeves volunteered to go. overboard with a rope to secure the boat, but while in the water was seized with the cramp and sank to rise no more. March 15, captured a very large whale, and succeeded In getting it alongside, blowing a gale the whole time. Unfortunately, the fluke chain parted, and we lost it. Mr. Soverino, the second mate, became very ill, and we were obliged to make all sail for The Bluff for medical assistance.. Arrived at that port next day and sent Mr. Soverino ashore to the hospital, where ho died, after lingering three days. On the same evening of our arrival at The Bluff it blew a terrific gale, the ship dragging until abreast of Dog Island, when the cable parted. By this accident we lost our best anchor and the whole of the cable. Captured our eighth and last whale off the Solander Rock on April 7, making us 85 tuns of sperm oil for the cruise. On April 16 anchored at the Bluff, weighed again next day at noon, and had light winds until arrival at Akaroa. Lyttelton Times, April 22. •
