CHAMBER OR COMMERCE.
The./first general- meeting*' of members of the Chamber was held yesterday afternoon in the Provincial Chambers for 'the ? purpose-Cf appointing office bearers for the year. The following members were present W. Bishop, .J. M. Cleland, B. J. Duncan, W., Gibson, J. K. Ge.orge, George Hunter, J. B. Harcourt, Hon. John .Johnston, C, J. Johnston, F. C. Kreeft, T. J. Ladd, H. M. Lyon, L. Levy, A. McTayish,' E. W, Mills, J, Bufne, T, Kennedy Macdonald, Manager, Colonial Bank of New* Zealand, Manager Bank - of New Zealand, J. O'Shea, E.; Pearce, J,= Plimmer, B. Port, J. W. Stevenson, D. T. Stuart, B. Greenfield, Jas.Smith, IC. iTringham, J. M. Taylor, Captain Thomas, G. H. Vennell, J. H. Wallace, W. Whittem, J. Woodward, and W.|H. Palmer. After a preliminary discussion it was decided, on the motion of Mr. Woodward, that the rules of the old Chamber be acted upon until the next meeting of the Chamber. The election of office bearers was then proceeded with, and resulted as follows Chairman, Mr. W. Levin ; Deputy Chairman, Mr. G, Hunter ; Committee, Messrs. E. Pearce, W. W. Jolmston, W. M. Bannatyne, Hon. J. Johnston, B. J. Duncan, J. Dransfield, W. Gibson,' E/W. Mills, J. Woodward, G. H. Vennell, L. Levy, J. B. George, W. W. Taylor, J. Nathan, and J. B. Harcourt, The Chairman stated that he had not taken upon himself to proceed with the appointment of a secretary, as he considered that a purely executive matter, which should bedealtwith by the committee. There were nine applications for theSoffioe. Sir. J. H, Wallace pointed out that accord-
ing to ,Eule‘ 14 the appointment of secretary must be decided by a majority of members, , aad the election, therefore, should be proceeded i-wltfe jit once./ , Wool>WAlll> drew attention to the fact that it would be extremely inconvenient if, after the meeting appointed a secretary, the committee should at their first meeting declare
him 'to be an unsuitable person.The Hon, Mr, Johnston agreed with the Chainiiah'.that the appointment was purely an executive' matter, and, should bo left in tho hands of tho committee. ’ On tho motion of Mr. Palmer, seconded by Mr. I’ofVi t was decided that the appointment should: rest with the committee, who were requested to meet at Mr, Levin’s office, at four o’clock next, day, to consider various matters affecting, the interests of the Chamber. The meeting then adjqunied. ■
