RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
Tuesday, March 9. (Before J. C. Crawford, Esq., R.M., and W. B. X>. Mantell, Esq., J.P.) OBTAINING money under false pretences. Charles Spiller was charged with obtaining money under false pretences, by means of a cheque drawn for £24, and signed "E. W. Mills and Co." The Inspector of Police asked for a remand till the following clay, when, he thought, he would be prepared to go on with the case. The remand was granted. The prisoner requested his Worship to commit without trial, but Mr. Crawford explained that he was ivnable to pursue such a course. TRESPASS. Three young men were charged with having, on the 27th of last month, trespassed on the property of his Honor the Superintendent, at the Hutt, and shot native game during the close season. The constable at the Hutt deposed to hearing the discharge of fire-arms on the afternoon of the day named. He waited under cover, and discovered the defendants coming out of a swamp belonging to Mr. Fitzherbert. They had, in a bag, a small native duck and a pukaka. When-he informed them they had broken the game law they expressed regret, and gave him their addresses readily. The three defendants said : that what, had been stated was quite true. They were, out for an afternoon's sport, but were quite unconscious that they were either trespassing or breaking the law regarding game. The Magistrate, in dismissing the defendants upon payment of costs, said that a similar charge had been brought against a man at the Hutt last week, but owing to an informality he was discharged. The case then before him was not such an aggravated one —the defendants expressed regret at their error, whilst the Hutt resident, was very bumptious and troublesome—and it would perhaps be. hard to punish the present defendants under these circumstances. Still, the native game must be protected, and he would not be inclined to pass over future offences of the kind. The Act fixed the maximum penalty a* £2O. As the defendants had made no concealment of the matter he would dismiss the case.
