MELBOURNE IMPORT MARKETS. (From the Argus, January 27.) In the import markets wo have little of interest to refer to. Business generally continues to maintain a dull and heavy aspect, and sales are made with difficulty. Flour is very inactive, and there are no large transactions effected, though holders evince every disposition to meet buyers. Ordinary parcels are quitted at £ll 7s. Cd., while £ll ss. would not be refused. Wheat is steady at 4s. lOd. for northern, and we observe the quittance by auction of 100 bags Tasmanian at 4s. 74d. Oats are extremely dull, and buyers cannot be got to operate at all. A small parcel of Tasmanian stout feeding was disposed of under the hammer at ss. 2d. A shipment of Californian was offered at same time, but there was nothing done, and the whole was withdrawn for ss. Maize ismoving off at our quotations of ss. Od. to ss. lOd. At these figures we understand that the Melbourne cargo of COO bags has been cleared out. Other sales have also been recorded at the same rates. Sugars meet with considerable attention. We note an improving inquiry for Mauritius, and sales have been reported at £33 15s. to £35. 4001 mats and pockets, Queensland grown, were cleared off publicly this forenoon, when grainy yellow counters brought £32 55.; medium and grey counters, £3l 55.; low counters, £2B 10s.; browns, £27; and rations, £22 15s. to £23 10s.- 1054 bags and mats davas, Natals, and Mauritius sorts were disposed of at same time at prices ranging from £22 10s. to £35 10s. Candles are firm. By auction, 650 boxes. In sound condition, were quitted at lOj-d. There is a good business doing in tobaccoes. Wo hear of the quittance of a line of Over the Water tens at a very full price—a sale which clears the stock of this brand out of importers’ hands. Black diamond twist has likewise found buyers at Is. 3jd. Further sales of lobsters have come under our notice at 10s. Cd. In liquids, nothing of the slightest importauce has been allowed to transpire.
