LYTTELTON, Saturday. Arrived : Langstone, from Wellington. Sunday. Sailed, 10.45 a.m.; Phcebe, s.s., for'Wellington. The brigantine Seagull, for Havelock, where she will load red pine for Dunedin, sailed on Saturday at noon. The barque Australind, Captain Rogers, got away on Saturday for Newcastle. The N.N.W. wind no doubt took the ship towards Cloudy Bay, but a lucky change to the southward during'the night probably carried her clean through the Strait. The ship Humboldt, Captain Busch, for Callao, sailed on Saturday last, Greenfield and Stewart’s fine brigantine Hannah Broomfield, after a day’s hard beating, came to an anchor on Saturday afternoon last. She is from Kaipara with a cargo of 90,000 feet of kauri timber, consigned to her owners. She completed her loading at the Te Kopn saw-mill so far back as the 14th of last month, but from the following day till the 2Sth ultimo, although she made many attempts, she was unable to cross the Kaipara bar. She got out on the 2Sth, and on the following day was overtaken by a strong gale which hasted two days. During its continuance it carried away all her head gear, fore shrouds (lower rigging), and started deck cargo. After repairing damages, the weather continued light, the winds till arrival off Terawiti being baffling. Four days were lost within sight of Mount Egmont. Saw a schooner, supposed to be the Forest Queen, beating about off the entrance to the Waitara River. The schooner Arthur Wakefield, with a cargo of sawn timber, arrived on Saturday last. As the schooner Florence was getting under way from the weather side of the wharf on Saturday afternoon, her mainsail caught the flying jibboom of the ship Carnatic. The boom did not suffer, but three or four seams of the sail were carried away. The schooner, which was bound to Foxton, brought up down the bay. Messrs. McMeckan, Blackwood and Co.’s fine steamer Otago, Captain John McLean, arrived in harbor from Melbourne and the Southern ports of New Zealand at three p.m. on Saturday, having left Lyttelton at eight o’clock the previous night. She discharged a considerable cargo during the afternoon, and sailed for Melbourne, via Nelson and West Coast, at ten o’clock on Saturday night. The steamer Manawatu, from Wanganui, arrived on Saturday morning last, after an ordinary run. She leaves again for Wanganui to-day. The steamer Taranaki, Captain Lloyd, arrived early yesterday morning from Manukau, Taranaki, Nelson, and Picton. Fine weather and very smooth sea were experienced till after leaving Picton, when a breeze from the S.E. prevailed crossing the Strait. The Taranaki will leave for Lyttelton and Port Chalmers this afternoon.
The steamer Stormbird, Captain Doilo, from Wanganui, arrived at 1.30 p.m. yesterday. Strong S.E. winds were experienced during the run down. The schooner Fairlie, recently purchased by Captain Norris and Messrs. Meyer, of Auckland, has been chartered to convey to Wellington and Dunedin from Auckland part of the cargo of kerosene, ex Edith .Rose, from New York.
If the Phoebe's propeller had been shrunk on the shaft it could scarcely have fitted tighter, and the exceedingly close connection has entailed an immensity of trouble in separating the two. The engineers resorted to every known method of unshipping screws, but without effect, until at last the boss of the screw split, and a section of it, with one of the blades attached, came away; the other section, with tho two blades, was removed from the shaft yesterday, and the ■screw being thus rendered useless for further service, will have to be replaced by a two-bladed propeller, which happened to be on board, and will do duty until a new propeller can be procured—whether of three or four blades is yet undecided, but most probably the latter, such being the recommendation of the Company’s senior engineer, Mr. Pollock. A four bladcd acew possesses the great recommendation of causing a minimum of vibration, but then its propelling power is somewhat less than that of a screw with fewer blades. Shipping the two-bladed screw will bo finished this morning. The Phcebe will sail to her advertised lime—Friday next. —Otago Daily Times, February 3. The barque Zelia, Captain Patey, which arrived here in December last from Mauritius, again anchored in Port Nicholson on Saturday night. She left here , for Nelson with a portion of her original cargo, upon discharge of which she proceeded under Wellington charter to Newcastle, and arrived as stated above after a fair passage of twelve days. The ketch Falcon. Fisk, master, from Blenheim, arrived yesterday morning after a fine run of twelve hours. Tho brig Neptune, from Wellington, bound for Newcastle, was sighted in Cloudy Day. Tho Falcon brought a cargo of wool, which sne will to-day tranship Into the ship Soukar. » The ketch XXX, from Blenheim, with a cargo of 100 bales wool, arrived yesterday morning after a rapid run across the Strait. An inquiry was held yesterday at the Steam Navigation olllco relative to the wreck of the brig Oberlln on Hogan's Island on tho 10th inst. The. captain, mate, and two of tho crew were examined. It was sworn that on the morning of the wreck there was a heavy fog. It being impossible to see a ship's length ahead. When the party went ashore on the island, after tho wreck, they set fire to the grass, winch burned all the time they were there. This accounts for. tho fires which were seen on the island. The captain attributed his being so far out of his course to a current trending In a S.S.E. direction, which he had never experienced before. The Board, after considering the matter, thought ho was to blame for steering such a course in foggy weather, and suspended his certificate for three calendar months.—Melbourne Argus, January 27. Owing to the scarcity of freight at present for London, the charter-party of the barque Jung Frau, just arrived from Wellington to load for that port, has been cancelled, and tho vessel will proceed to Newcastle at once in ballast, to await orders. —New Zealand Herald, February 8. The Duchess of Argyle, from Shields, with railway iron, at Sydney, reports speaking the steam-tug Black Boy, for Melbourne, in 14dcg. N., all well. The barque Medora has arrived at Hong Kong from Lyttelton. NEWCASTLE ITEMS. The barque Cordelia and the ship The Douglas have loaded coals. The former takes her cargo to Manilla, and the latter to San Francisco. The Dunedin barque Hadda, of 334 tons register, has changed hands for £2BOO. Eighteen shillings a ton is the rate now ruling in Newcastle for freight to Wellington,
